Ramaphosa set to deliver SONA 2019 in June

By Annisa Essack

South Africa will see its second State of the Nation Address for 2019 and the first for the 6th democratic Parliament.

This, after the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thandi Modisa, and Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, Amos Masondo, have received a letter from President Cyril Ramphosa informing them of when he will deliver his much-anticipated speech.

The SONA, set to take place in less than a month, will be the second one to be held this year.
Following the ANC’s victory in the May 8 general elections and Ramaphosa’s cabinet announcement and the swearing-in of ministers, expectations are high that he will put more emphasis on measures to deal with, namely corruption, stabilise state-owned enterprises, draw investors and create job opportunities.

Parliament’s spokesperson, Moloto Mothapo, says Ramaphosa has in a letter indicated that the joint sitting of both houses of Parliament, to enable him to deliver his State of the Nation Address, will take place on 20 June 2019 at 19h00.
