SA COVID-19 Infections Hit 100,000 Mark, Deaths Spike to 1,991

The Health Department has announced that the number of COVID-19 infections in South Africa has risen to 101,590.

This is an increase of 4,648 from Sunday’s announcement.

The number of deaths has also increased by 61 bringing the total to 1,991.

The Western Cape has the most infections with 52,554 followed by Gauteng at 22,341, Eastern Cape at 16,895, KwaZulu-Natal 5,278, Free State 772, North West 2,315, Mpumalanga 596, Limpopo 582, Northern Cape 254 and unallocated infections 3.

The total number of recoveries to date is 53,444 this translates to a recovery rate of 52.6%.

Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize says the total number of COVID-19 tests conducted to date is 1,353,176 this is an increase of 25,116 which were done in the last 24 hours.

“Regrettably, we report a further 61 COVID-19 related deaths- 1 from Limpopo, 3 from Kwa-Zulu Natal, 18 from Eastern Cape and 39 from Western Cape. This brings the total deaths to 1991. The mortality rate is 2%.”

Mkhize has expressed his condolences to the affected families of those who have succumbed to the pandemic.
