The South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) says it will allow for a “controlled, compassionate” access programme for the use of anti-parasitic drug Ivermectin in the treatment of COVID-19.

Sahpra has given an update on Ivermectin hosted by the National Press Club on Wednesday.

AfriForum approached the Pretoria High Court to compel Sahrpa and Health Minister Dr. Zweli Mkhize to allow the use of Ivermectin to treat those infected with the Coronavirus.

Sahpra CEO Dr Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlelau says they have considered the current context in the country wherein it is battling the second wave of the pandemic and lives being lost.

Makokotlelau says many medical practitioners have reached out to Sahpra.

“We have considered all of that and the approach we will be taking going forward is that we facilitate a controlled compassionate access programme for Ivermectin. This does not mean our position changes around the availability of lack of availability of scientific data. But we as a regulate had to have very in-depth discussions around the context we find ourselves in with the pandemic and limited options available.”

Makokotlelau says healthcare professionals administering  Ivermectin will report to the Sahpra.
