The South African Policing Union, or SAPU and NUPSAW, has called off the strike action in the public service for today. The unions served the Department of Public Service and Administration with a notice to strike on the 8th of this month as they supported the strike initiated and activated by other unions in the Public Service.

This was after the unions, and the Department of Public Service agreed on a 7% wage-hike settlement on Wednesday evening.

Initially, the department had tabled a 4.7% pay increase offer, which union members rejected.

The nation’s spokesperson, Lesiba Thobakgale, confirmed that Sapu, working together with NUPSAW, National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union, and Democratic Nurses Organisation of South Africa, have signed the settlement agreement to resolve the impasse.

The settlement agreement outlines the provision made and agreed to by the parties that the 3% salary increase will be augmented for the 2022/2023 financial year during the negotiations and the conclusion of the 2023/2024 wage negotiations.

Thobakgale said the strike was called off as a political will was enforced on the employer, and an agreement was reached.

Meanwhile, members of the police union will be on duty on Monday for the EFF’s national shutdown.
