Shootout at Lenasia Taxi Rank

Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News, 2014-06-10

Two people have been wounded during a shootout between two rival taxi associations at the Lenasia taxi rank opposite the train station, south of Johannesburg.

Police are on the scene but say the situation at the rank is calm and taxis are running as normal.

It’s not yet clear why the two groups opened fire on each other, but the shootout is believed to have been sparked by a clash over routes.

The police’s Kay Makhubela said the suspects fled in a white Audi A4.

“Two were injured and taken to hospital. We don’t know the motive at the moment.”

Makhubela said a case of attempted murder was opened and police are investigating.

No arrests have been made.

Update:

One of the taxi drivers wounded in a shootout at the Lenasia taxi rank has died in hospital.

The man was a member of The Lenasia Taxi Association.

The taxi associations Bongani Lukhele claims the man was shot by hitmen hired by a fellow member of the association. – EWN
