Calls have been made for a comprehensive e-book to ease the transition from Grade 12 to first years on campus to now being printed into a textbook. The e-book entitled “The Undergraduate Tool kit” was launched online this Saturday.

The book was compiled by the local Non-Profit Organization “Lighting Student Pathways.”

NPO Founder Kudsiya Cassim says the public and private sectors can sponsor a hard copy of the book to a learner or school of their choice.

The Undergraduate Toolkit is a self-empowerment learning aid that follows the Post Grad Toolkit from 2011. Targeting students at post-grad study levels, ranging from Honours to Masters and ultimately the PhD, has been tremendously successful.

“We have had very positive feedback from students in South Africa and on the continent,” says Cassim.

According to Cassim, based on the success of the Post Grad Toolkit, there was a phenomenal need from students, educators and even parents for a similar learning resource, leading to the compilation of the Undergraduate Toolkit.

Available in two formats, the e-book consists of almost six parts, 900 pages and 18 chapters covering various topics.

Meanwhile, one chapter in the book focuses on mentorship, which is essential but underused in South Africa.

The critical need for young people in particular, especially inducted employees, orientating into workplaces etc. To have the support systems that formal mentors and coaches can offer, in terms of guidance for early career professionals into the mature stages, is too late to start in the workplace.

“If we can get our school learners orientated to the concept, underlying philosophy of effective mentorship from an early stage. It’s then realized that it takes a village to raise a professional,” she says.
