The truck driver who slammed into 46 vehicles on the M41 in Umhlanga in KwaZulu-Natal was arrested. 23-year-old Sithulile Zulu handed himself over to police on Monday night after fleeing the disaster scene. Multiple people sustained injuries, although no deaths were reported. The Durban North police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.

Speaking on the latest accident involving a truck, CEO of the Road Freight Agency, Gavin Kelly, said some critical failings not solely placed on authorities need to be addressed.

According to Gavin, there are two pronks to the issue, the industry itself and those involved in ensuring safety and roadworthy standards.

Gavin highlighted ways of assisting the transportation of heavy goods and large freight vehicles industry to become safer.

He said compliance, timing and scheduling of vehicles on the road might work in South Africa with bits and pieces of a greater transport system.

Meanwhile, Zulu is facing charges linked to the over 40 vehicle accidents that damaged many cars.

State prosecutor Seema Reddy said the State still had to verify Zulu’s home address.

“At this stage, your worship the accused’s address has not been verified, and he has provided an address outside the Durban area, which the investigating officers need to verify. Your worship, the profiling of the accused has not been done.”

The matter will return to court next week Wednesday for bail proceedings.
