The United Ulama Council of South Africa has welcomed the decision by President Cyril Ramaphosa to allow places of worship to resume with congregational prayer.

Ramphosa announced on Tuesday that congregational prayer under level 3 will be allowed from 1 June with strict conditions.

Under Level 4 regulations public gatherings and prayers in congregation at places of worship had been banned to stop the spread of the Coronavirus.

Speaking to Radio Islam, UUCSA’s Ml Yusuf Patel says that the opening of the Masaajid brings a sense of enormous relief as the places of worship plays a prominent role in the lives of all Muslims.

“We express our gratitude to Allah for once again inviting us back to his house. It was certainly a very painful and testing time for all Muslims. We will now certainly enter the masjid with a sense of greater appreciation.”

Ml Patel says Muslims must remember that the COVID-19 pandemic is not yet over.

“The need to act responsibly as we go back to the masjid is as important as ever. We call upon congregants to to act responsibly and abide by the protocols that will be put in place.”

In his address to the nation, Ramaphosa said congregations will be limited in size to 50 people or less, depending on the space available.
