Vlakfontein Residents Protest over Power Outages

Faizel Patel, 2016-06-14

Residents of Vlakfontein near Zakariyya Park have gone on the rampage blocking the Golden Highway with rock and burning tyres.

It’s understood they are protesting over the lack of electricity and power outages in the area.

The police’s Kalipha Mvula has advised motorists to seek alternate routes and avoid the Golden Highway.

“The protest action that started yesterday in the afternoon is still going on. The residents of Vlakfontein are complaining about power outages, they didn’t have electricity since last Saturday so they decided to take protest action and barricade the Golden Highway with burning tyres and rocks.”

Mvula says City Power has restored electricity to some extensions of Vlakfontein.

“City Power technicians were called in last night and they managed to restore power in Vlakfontein extension 2 and 3. They are still working on restoring power in extension 1.”
