“We Will Not be Going Into Coalition With Anyone,” – Malema

Faizel Patel, 2016-08-17

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) says it will not be going into a coalition with any political party.

The red berets held a press briefing in Alexandra today after two weeks of talks behind closed doors to establish the representation in major hung metros like Tshwane, Johannesburg and Ekurhuleni where no party could win an outright majority following the 2016 municipal elections.

EFF leader Julius Malema says the red berets will not be working with any party because it did not meet its requirements.

“We are happy to say to our people that we will not be going into a coalition with anyone, therefore the EFF will be assuming its seats as an opposition.”

Malema says after meeting with the African National Congress (ANC), the ruling party were non-committal to the removal of President Jacob Zuma, expropriation of land without compensation, the nationalisation of banks and mines, the removal of “Die Stem from the national anthem and free education.

He says the EFF is the ANC’s biggest enemy and that the ruling party has chosen Zuma over the metros.

Malema says while there is no political agreement in place, the EFF will vote with the opposition in hung metros.

“To us to be neutral will be cowardice, therefore, we will be voting for the IFP in the hung municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal and everywhere else. We will be voting for a service delivery forum in Rustenburg. We will be voting for the DA in Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg and Port Elizabeth.”

Malema says having to choose between the ANC and the DA was a tough choice.

“We were caught between two devils and we chose the lesser devil. We have heard you South Africa – we will not go into bed with the ANC.”

Malema reiterated that while the EFF would not form a coalition with the Democratic Alliance, the DA is the “better devil” and it would vote with the party in the Gauteng metros.

“We will vote for the opposition, but we are not in bed with the DA.”

Malema says the EFF is not power hungry or after positions.
