Widespread Condemnation After Ballistic Missiles Fired at Makkah

There has been widespread condemnation of missiles being fired at Makkah in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Gazette reports that according to eyewitnesses, Saudi air defense forces intercepted two Houthi ballistic missiles on Monday, one over Taif heading towards Makkah and the other over Jeddah.

The attempted attack on one of Islam’s holiest sites comes after millions of pilgrims across the globe converged in Makkah to perform Umrah during the blessed month of Ramadan.

The Kingdom’s air defense forces were able to destroy the ballistic missiles 60 km from Makkah with the debris scattered in the Jallel valley that extends to Makkah.

In light of the attack, the Yemeni government says it strongly condemns the Houthi attempt to target Makkah, adding that the attack on the holy site is “a full-fledged terrorist act”.

Pakistan also condemned the attempted attack saying it reaffirms its solidarity with Saudi Arabia and reiterates its support against any threat to the security of the kingdom.

This is the second time the Houthis tried to target Makkah after the Iranian-backed militias targeted the holy city in July 2017.
