An explosive expos\u00e9 has reignited scrutiny of Deputy President Paul Mashatile\u2019s rise to power, detailing the intricate web of patronage and influence surrounding one of South Africa\u2019s most powerful political figures. Investigative Journalist Pieter du Toit, in his new book The Dark Prince<\/em>, warns that Mashatile\u2019s ascent could mark a dangerous return to patterns of corruption and factionalism reminiscent of the Zuma era.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Radio Islam International,<\/em><\/a> Du Toit said his investigation stemmed from a need for transparency around a man who \u201ccould become the country\u2019s next president.\u201d As head of News24\u2019s investigative unit, he explained, \u201cIf someone wants to become president, there needs to be transparency in their professional and business dealings. What we found wasn\u2019t a pretty picture.\u201d<\/p>\n

Du Toit said the title The Dark Prince<\/em> captures Mashatile\u2019s opaque dealings and the influence networks he has built over decades in politics. \u201cHe is a patron sitting in the middle of concentric networks of influence businesspeople, politicians, friends, and family who have benefited from his senior position in the ANC and government,\u201d he noted.<\/p>\n

Tracing Mashatile\u2019s journey from an anti-apartheid activist in Alexandra to the country\u2019s second-highest office, Du Toit highlights the emergence of the so-called \u201cAlex Mafia\u201d a close-knit group of political and business figures whose fortunes have mirrored Mashatile\u2019s own. \u201cMany of them benefited from proximity to him, gaining access to government contracts and political figures,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Drawing parallels between Mashatile and former president Jacob Zuma, Du Toit warned that South Africa could be facing a \u201cZuma 2.0 moment\u201d if history repeats itself. \u201cMashatile represents a faction of the ANC where it\u2019s about rent-seeking and resource extraction. These patterns of corruption and patronage are repeating themselves,\u201d he cautioned.<\/p>\n

While the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry continues to probe links between organized crime and state actors, Du Toit said the deputy president\u2019s lavish lifestyle raises red flags. \u201cHe hasn\u2019t been charged yet, but what we know is that his extravagant lifestyle is funded by those around him tenderpreneurs and family members who have benefited from government loans,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

As South Africa faces a changing political landscape and declining ANC dominance, The Dark Prince<\/em> serves as both a biography and a warning. \u201cWe need to understand who Paul Mashatile is, what he\u2019s done, and which networks he\u2019ll bring with him to the Union Buildings, because the stakes for the country have never been higher,\u201d Du Toit concluded.<\/p>\n
