DA mayoral candidate Haniff Hoosen challenges eThekwini\u2019s \u201cblatant misinformation,\u201d vowing to fight unlawful senior appointments as the high-stakes case heads back to court in February. \ud83d\udcf8<\/p><\/div>\n

This follows a public statement by DA mayoral candidate Haniff Hoosen, who dismissed the municipality\u2019s claims that the party had abandoned its legal challenge, calling the assertion \u201ca blatant lie\u201d<\/em> that exposes a deeper \u201cleadership crisis in eThekwini.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hoosen, who personally attended the court proceedings, said the municipality\u2019s version of events was not only false but deliberately misleading. \u201cI was in court yesterday. The mayor was not in court yesterday and neither was the MEC,\u201d<\/em> he said, emphasising that the judge recognised the \u201cserious significance\u201d<\/em> of the matter and agreed to prioritise the case on the roll early next year.<\/p>\n

According to Hoosen, all legal teams mutually agreed to 18\u201320 February 2026 as the court dates, a decision recorded in the draft order: \u201cIt is hereby recorded that the parties will approach the judge president\u2026 and that counsel are available for the hearing of the matter on the 18th, 19th, and 20th of February 2026.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cWe did not abandon anything,\u201d<\/em> Hoosen stressed, rejecting the municipality\u2019s narrative as an attempt to \u201csow confusion\u201d<\/em> and divert attention from the real issue \u2014 the allegedly unlawful appointment of senior managers lacking required qualifications.<\/p>\n

The DA\u2019s application seeks to block the permanent appointment of officials whom Hoosen claims are responsible for Durban\u2019s deepening crisis. He highlighted \u201cmassive water issues,\u201d<\/em> a broken sanitation system spilling raw sewage into the ocean, decaying roads, and failing infrastructure, all while \u201c60% of water is getting wasted because of old infrastructure that hasn\u2019t been maintained.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Hoosen criticised the municipality for attempting to reward the very individuals linked to these failures with \u201ca higher salary increased by R1 million.\u201d<\/em> He pointed to one candidate earmarked to lead Metro Police who \u201cdoesn\u2019t have the necessary qualifications\u2026 the job requirement is a minimum law degree.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

He further accused the municipality of rushing contract signatures within 48 hours, despite legal requirements that prevent such a rush, and of pushing for salary increases just days after the appointments.<\/p>\n

Calling the municipality staff \u201cprofessional liars,\u201d<\/em> Hoosen said the DA will fight \u201cto the end degree\u201d<\/em> to stop the appointments and protect governance integrity.<\/p>\n

With the judge signalling the matter\u2019s importance by fast-tracking it on the court roll, Hoosen expressed confidence: \u201cThere isn\u2019t any court that\u2019s going to say, \u2018You\u2019ve operated unlawfully, you can continue.\u2019\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Further developments are expected as the case returns to court in February.<\/p>\n
