In the Qur\u2019an, Allah describes different states of the nafs (soul), teaching us that the soul is not fixed \u2014 it can rise, fall, weaken, strengthen, and transform.<\/p>\n<p>Understanding these stages helps us recognize where we stand and where we hope to reach.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Nafs al-Ammarah (The Commanding Soul)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Allah says:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ufd3f\u0625\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0633\u064e \u0644\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0645\u0651\u064e\u0627\u0631\u064e\u0629\u064c \u0628\u0650\u0627\u0644\u0633\u0651\u064f\u0648\u0621\u0650 \u0625\u0650\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0627 \u0645\u064e\u0627 \u0631\u064e\u062d\u0650\u0645\u064e \u0631\u064e\u0628\u0651\u0650\u064a\ufd3e<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, the soul surely commands to evil, except those upon whom my Lord has mercy.\u201d (Surah Yusuf 12: 53)<\/p>\n<p>This is the lowest state of the soul \u2014 the soul that commands toward wrongdoing. It prioritizes desire over discipline, pleasure over principle. It resists prayer, seeks shortcuts, and justifies sin.<\/p>\n<p>The nafs al-ammarah is not always dramatic. Sometimes it whispers subtly:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can pray later.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just one small sin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo one will notice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If left unchecked, it leads to heedlessness and distance from Allah. But it is important to remember: this state is not permanent. It is the starting point of struggle, not the final destination.<\/p>\n<p>Ramadhan directly confronts this soul. When we fast despite hunger, we prove that we are not slaves to our desires. When we lower our gaze or guard our tongues, we discipline the commanding soul.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Nafs al-Lawwamah (The Self-Reproaching Soul)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Allah swears by this soul:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ufd3f\u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0627 \u0623\u064f\u0642\u0652\u0633\u0650\u0645\u064f \u0628\u0650\u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0633\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0648\u0651\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064e\u0629\u0650\ufd3e<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I swear by the self-reproaching soul.\u201d (Surah Al-Qiyamah 75: 2)<\/p>\n<p>This is the soul that feels guilt after sin, that blames itself for shortcomings, and that longs to improve. It is a sign of life in the heart.<\/p>\n<p>When someone lies and later feels regret \u2014 that is nafs al-lawwamah.<\/p>\n<p>When we miss Fajr and feel disappointed in ourselves \u2014 that is nafs al-lawwamah.<\/p>\n<p>This stage is painful, but it is hopeful. The discomfort of guilt is actually a mercy from Allah. It pulls us back toward repentance.<\/p>\n<p>The Prophet \ufdfa said:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064e\u062f\u064e\u0645\u064f \u062a\u064e\u0648\u0652\u0628\u064e\u0629\u064c<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegret is repentance.\u201d (Ibn Majah 4252)<\/p>\n<p>A soul that reproaches itself is already moving upward. Ramadhan strengthens this soul through nightly reflection, du\u02bf\u0101, and Qur\u2019an recitation. The more we reflect, the more aware we become of our spiritual state.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Nafs al-Mutmainnah (The Tranquil Soul)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This is the highest and most beautiful state. Allah says:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\ufd3f\u064a\u064e\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u064a\u0651\u064e\u062a\u064f\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0633\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0645\u064f\u0637\u0652\u0645\u064e\u0626\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0629\u064f \u06dd \u0627\u0631\u0652\u062c\u0650\u0639\u0650\u064a \u0625\u0650\u0644\u064e\u0649\u0670 \u0631\u064e\u0628\u0651\u0650\u0643\u0650 \u0631\u064e\u0627\u0636\u0650\u064a\u064e\u0629\u064b \u0645\u0651\u064e\u0631\u0652\u0636\u0650\u064a\u0651\u064e\u0629\u064b\ufd3e<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cO tranquil soul, return to your Lord, pleased and pleasing.\u201d (Surah Al-Fajr 89: 27\u201328)<\/p>\n<p>This soul has found peace through obedience. It trusts Allah in hardship, remains patient in difficulty, and feels content with divine decree. It no longer fights against guidance \u2014 it embraces it.<\/p>\n<p>This does not mean the person is perfect. It means their heart has reached a state of surrender and trust. Worship becomes sweetness rather than burden.<\/p>\n<p>The Prophet \ufdfa taught that true richness is not material wealth but inner contentment:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0633\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u063a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0649 \u0639\u064e\u0646\u0652 \u0643\u064e\u062b\u0652\u0631\u064e\u0629\u0650 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0639\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0636\u0650\u060c \u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0643\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0652\u063a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0649 \u063a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0633\u0650<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cRichness is not having many possessions, but true richness is the richness of the soul.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>(Bukhari 6446, Muslim 1051)<\/p>\n<p>That richness belongs to the tranquil soul.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Journey of Ramadhan<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ramadhan is a journey through these stages. We may begin struggling with nafs al-ammarah. Through fasting, prayer, and repentance, we awaken nafs al-lawwamah.
