The scholars explain that the nafs is not three different souls \u2014 but one soul that moves through different conditions depending on our choices, environment, and relationship with Allah.<\/p>\n<p>In this discussion, we focus on the two struggling stages of the soul.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Nafs al-Amm\u0101rah (The Soul that Commands Evil)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Mentioned in the Qur\u2019an in Surah Yusuf:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0625\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0671\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0633\u064e \u0644\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0645\u0651\u064e\u0627\u0631\u064e\u0629\u064c\u06e2 \u0628\u0650\u0671\u0644\u0633\u0651\u064f\u0648\u0653\u0621\u0650 <\/strong><strong>\u06da<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, the soul is surely a persistent enjoiner of evil\u2026\u201d \u2014 Qur\u2019an 12:53<\/p>\n<p>This is the lowest state of the soul.<\/p>\n<p><em>Characteristics:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Inclined toward desires<\/li>\n<li>Easily tempted<\/li>\n<li>Justifies wrongdoing<\/li>\n<li>Acts impulsively<\/li>\n<li>Prioritizes dunya over akhirah<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This soul:<\/p>\n<p><em>Says \u201cJust this once.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Delays repentance.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Loves comfort over discipline.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It is not that a person is evil \u2014 but the soul is uncontrolled.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Reflection:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every one of us experiences this state. When we feel lazy to pray, when anger controls us, when we gossip \u2014 that is the nafs al-amm\u0101rah pulling us.<\/p>\n<p>The danger is when a person becomes comfortable in this state and stops feeling guilty.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Nafs al-Laww\u0101mah (The Self-Reproaching Soul)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Mentioned in Surah Al-Qiy\u0101mah:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0627\u0653 \u0623\u064f\u0642\u0652\u0633\u0650\u0645\u064f \u0628\u0650\u0671\u0644\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0633\u0650 \u0671\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0648\u0651\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064e\u0629\u0650<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I swear by the self-reproaching soul.\u201d \u2014 Qur\u2019an 75: 2<\/p>\n<p>This is the awakening soul.<\/p>\n<p><em>Characteristics:<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Feels guilt after sin<\/li>\n<li>Reflects on actions<\/li>\n<li>Struggles internally<\/li>\n<li>Makes tawbah<\/li>\n<li>Wants to improve<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This soul:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Says, \u201cWhy did I do that?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Feels regret after missing salah<\/li>\n<li>Cries after wrongdoing<\/li>\n<li>Keeps trying again<\/li>\n<li>This stage is a sign of Imaan. Feeling guilty is a mercy from Allah.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Important Point:<\/p>\n<p>The believer constantly moves between Amm\u0101rah and Laww\u0101mah.
