The month is winding down, but the opportunities for reward are still abundant. This morning, my colleagues spoke about charity and generosity of the heart \u2014 how giving softens the heart and loosens the grip of the dunya on our souls.<\/p>\n<p>But now, we go deeper. We address not just the act of giving, but\u00a0how\u00a0we give. Because the same action can have very different effects on the heart depending on how it is done.<\/p>\n<p>Today, we speak about\u00a0Giving Quietly and Sincerely.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Danger of Showing Off<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When you give charity, there is a subtle danger that creeps in. The ego whispers:\u00a0Look at how generous you are. Look at how much you gave. People will admire you<em>.<\/em>\u00a0This is riya&#8217; \u2014 showing off \u2014 and it can destroy the entire reward.<\/p>\n<p>The Prophet \ufdfa warned us about those who give to be seen:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;\u0625\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0651 \u0623\u064e\u062e\u0652\u0648\u064e\u0641\u064e \u0645\u064e\u0627 \u0623\u064e\u062e\u064e\u0627\u0641\u064f \u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0643\u064f\u0645\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0650\u0651\u0631\u0652\u0643\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0623\u064e\u0635\u0652\u063a\u064e\u0631\u064f&#8221; \u0642\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064f\u0648\u0627: \u0648\u064e\u0645\u064e\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0634\u0650\u0651\u0631\u0652\u0643\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0623\u064e\u0635\u0652\u063a\u064e\u0631\u064f \u064a\u064e\u0627 \u0631\u064e\u0633\u064f\u0648\u0644\u064e \u0627\u0644\u0644\u064e\u0651\u0647\u0650\u061f \u0642\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064e: &#8220;\u0627\u0644\u0631\u0650\u0651\u064a\u064e\u0627\u0621\u064f&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Indeed, the thing I fear most for you is the lesser shirk.&#8221; They asked: &#8220;What is the lesser shirk, O Messenger of Allah?&#8221; He said: &#8220;Showing off.&#8221;\u00a0(Ahmad)<\/p>\n<p>Riya&#8217; is dangerous because it is subtle. You can give a thousand rands, but if you gave it so people would praise you, you have lost the reward. You have fed your ego, not your soul.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Excellence of Hidden Charity<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Allah praises those who give secretly. He describes them:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;\u0625\u0650\u0646 \u062a\u064f\u0628\u0652\u062f\u064f\u0648\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0635\u064e\u0651\u062f\u064e\u0642\u064e\u0627\u062a\u0650 \u0641\u064e\u0646\u0650\u0639\u0650\u0645\u064e\u0651\u0627 \u0647\u0650\u064a\u064e \u06d6 \u0648\u064e\u0625\u0650\u0646 \u062a\u064f\u062e\u0652\u0641\u064f\u0648\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064f\u0624\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0648\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0641\u064f\u0642\u064e\u0631\u064e\u0627\u0621\u064e \u0641\u064e\u0647\u064f\u0648\u064e \u062e\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0631\u064c \u0644\u064e\u0651\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If you disclose your charitable expenditures, they are good; but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, it is better for you.&#8221;\u00a0(Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:271)<\/p>\n<p>Why is hidden charity better? Because it protects your intention. It ensures that only Allah knows what you gave. It trains your heart to seek His pleasure alone.<\/p>\n<p>The Prophet \ufdfa mentioned that among those who will be shaded on the Day of Judgment is:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;\u0631\u064e\u062c\u064f\u0644\u064c \u062a\u064e\u0635\u064e\u062f\u064e\u0651\u0642\u064e \u0628\u0650\u0635\u064e\u062f\u064e\u0642\u064e\u0629\u064d \u0641\u064e\u0623\u064e\u062e\u0652\u0641\u064e\u0627\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u062d\u064e\u062a\u064e\u0651\u0649\u0670 \u0644\u064e\u0627 \u062a\u064e\u0639\u0652\u0644\u064e\u0645\u064e \u0634\u0650\u0645\u064e\u0627\u0644\u064f\u0647\u064f \u0645\u064e\u0627 \u062a\u064f\u0646\u0641\u0650\u0642\u064f \u064a\u064e\u0645\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064f\u0647\u064f&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A man who gave charity and concealed it so much that his left hand did not know what his right hand spent.&#8221;\u00a0(Bukhari &amp; Muslim)<\/p>\n<p>This is the level of hidden charity \u2014 so secret that you yourself barely register it. This is the giving that purifies the heart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Heart That Gives Secretly<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What happens to the heart when you give secretly?<\/p>\n<p>It learns to seek Allah alone.\u00a0When no one knows, you cannot be seeking their praise. You are forced to do it for Him.<\/p>\n<p>It breaks free from people&#8217;s opinions.\u00a0You stop caring what others think. Your worth is no longer tied to their approval.<\/p>\n<p>It experiences true freedom.\u00a0The one who gives secretly is free\u2014free from the need to impress, free from the trap of reputation, free from the chains of ego.<\/p>\n<p>It draws closer to Allah.\u00a0Secret deeds create intimacy. When you and Allah share a secret, your bond strengthens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Balance: Open and Hidden<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This does not mean all charity must be secret. There is a place for open giving \u2014 to inspire others, to normalize generosity, to fulfil certain obligations like zakat. The key is\u00a0intention.<\/p>\n<p>If you give openly to encourage others, that is good. If you give openly so people will praise you, that is destructive. Check your heart before every act.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Practical Steps for Hidden Giving<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In these remaining days of Ramadan, challenge yourself:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Give without telling anyone.\u00a0Not your spouse, not your children, not your friends. Let it be between you and Allah.<\/li>\n<li>Give in ways that cannot be traced.\u00a0Drop money in a collection box. Pay for someone&#8217;s groceries anonymously. Donate online without leaving your name.<\/li>\n<li>Give spontaneously.\u00a0When you see someone in need, give immediately, without overthinking. The less you plan, the less your ego gets involved.<\/li>\n<li>Give what you love.\u00a0The Prophet \ufdfa said:<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>&#8220;\u0623\u064e\u0641\u0652\u0636\u064e\u0644\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0635\u064e\u0651\u062f\u064e\u0642\u064e\u0629\u0650 \u0623\u064e\u0646\u0652 \u062a\u064e\u0635\u064e\u062f\u064e\u0651\u0642\u064e \u0648\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0646\u0652\u062a\u064e \u0635\u064e\u062d\u0650\u064a\u062d\u064c \u0634\u064e\u062d\u0650\u064a\u062d\u064c\u060c \u062a\u064e\u0623\u0652\u0645\u064f\u0644\u064f \u0627\u0644\u0652\u063a\u0650\u0646\u064e\u0649\u0670 \u0648\u064e\u062a\u064e\u062e\u0652\u0634\u064e\u0649 \u0627\u0644\u0652\u0641\u064e\u0642\u0652\u0631\u064e&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The best charity is to give when you are healthy, reluctant, hoping for wealth and fearing poverty.&#8221;\u00a0(Bukhari)<\/p>\n<p>Giving when it hurts \u2014 that is the charity that purifies most.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Quiet Heart<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A heart that gives quietly is a heart that has been renewed. It no longer needs the applause of people. It is satisfied with the gaze of Allah.<\/p>\n<p>As we prepare to leave Ramadhan, cultivate this quiet generosity. Let it become a habit that continues long after the month ends. Let it be one of the ways you carry Ramadhan forward.<\/p>\n<p>May Allah accept our hidden and open charity and purify our hearts through giving.
