The crisis in the Middle East has overshadowed Hungary\u2019s upcoming elections this Sunday.<\/p>\n

Victor Orb\u00e1n, the \u201clongest standing European leader\u201d is standing for another term. But for the first time in 16 years, it appears that he may be losing to his former acolyte and diplomat P\u00e9ter Magyar and his Tisza Party.<\/p>\n

Despite its relatively small population of 10million, Deen states Hungary stands out as a \u201ctest ground\u201d for right wing policies and parties in Europe and Orb\u00e1n refers to himself as a \u201cliberal democrat\u201d.<\/p>\n

The elections have garnered attention from Italy and the US, as well President Trump\u2019s endorsements, as a loss for Orb\u00e1n may signal \u201cshifting sands\u201d in Hungarian politics. Although media coverage has been minimal, what has come to the fore is right-wing sentiment, politics and policies.<\/p>\n

Many Hungarians may vote against Orb\u00e1n because of the perceived levels of corruption and cronyism. With similarities in policies between Orb\u00e1n and his opponent in terms of popularism, immigration and policies, the media is trying to amplify and create an illusion of change if Magyar is to come in. Outwardly, though, it is evident that \u201cless change will happen\u201d than is expected. While P\u00e9ter Magyar may engage more with the EU, Russia may lose out in the election.<\/p>\n
