We are a country made up of many cultures, languages, traditions and backgrounds. Our diversity is one of our greatest strengths. Yet it can also become a source of tension if we allow fear, prejudice or misunderstanding to divide us.

This raises an important question:

How do we strengthen social cohesion in a country made up of many cultures, languages and backgrounds?

The lessons of Ashura provide valuable guidance.

Ashura reminds us that Allah’s guidance is for all of humanity. The story of Nabi Musa (AS) teaches us that people can overcome great challenges when they unite around truth, justice and faith. It also reminds us that societies become stronger when they uphold dignity and fairness for all.

South Africa today faces many challenges. Unemployment, poverty, crime and inequality affect millions of people. These pressures can sometimes create frustration and division. When communities are struggling, it becomes easy to focus on our differences rather than our common humanity.

However, division has never solved our problems.

In recent months, government leaders, community organisations and business groups have warned that xenophobic violence damages social cohesion, harms relationships with neighbouring countries and weakens South Africa’s standing on the continent and internationally.

The lesson is clear: when communities become divided, everyone loses.

Islam teaches respect, justice, kindness and compassion towards others. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) encouraged good neighbourliness, honesty in our dealings and concern for the wellbeing of those around us. These values help create communities that are safe, welcoming and united.

One practical way of strengthening social cohesion is through learning from one another.

Too often, people fear what they do not understand. When we take the time to learn about different cultures, languages and experiences, we discover that we have far more in common than we realise. We all want safety for our families. We all want opportunities for our children. We all want to live with dignity and hope for a better future.

Learning from one another helps replace suspicion with understanding.

Another important step is rejecting discrimination in all its forms.

Discrimination can begin with a joke, a stereotype or a careless comment. But when left unchecked, it can grow into exclusion, hostility and even violence. Ashura reminds us that we should stand against injustice wherever it appears. This includes injustice directed at people because of their race, nationality, language or background.

Creating safe and welcoming communities is everyone’s responsibility.

Governments have a role to play.

Community leaders have a role to play.

Religious institutions have a role to play.

But ordinary citizens also have a role to play.

Every act of kindness strengthens social cohesion.

Every respectful conversation builds trust.

Every effort to understand another person’s experience helps bring communities together.

South Africa’s future depends not only on economic growth or political leadership. It also depends on our ability to live together peacefully despite our differences.

As we commemorate Ashura, let us remember that unity does not mean everyone is the same. Unity means people of different backgrounds working together for the common good. It means respecting one another while remaining true to our own beliefs and values.

Perhaps the question Ashura asks us today is this:

Will we allow our differences to divide us, or will we use our diversity to build a stronger South Africa?

The answer lies in our willingness to embrace the values of truth, justice, compassion and unity. These are not only the lessons of Ashura. They are also the foundations of a peaceful, prosperous and united nation.

May Allah guide us to be people who bring communities together, strengthen understanding and contribute towards a South Africa where every person can live with dignity, safety and hope.
