The Durban University of Technology (DUT) has made history as the first institution on the African continent to host the DataScientia International Symposium, an international gathering of researchers, policymakers, industry leaders and technology experts focused on the future of artificial intelligence (AI).<\/p>\n

Held from 22 to 24 July 2026, the symposium is centred on the theme \u201cDiversity-aware Sovereign AI\u201d and marks the first time the annual event has been hosted in Africa after more than a decade of being held in Europe. The 2027 edition is scheduled to take place in the Middle East.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Radio Islam International, Dr Oyeniyi Alimi, Academic Event Co-ordinator of the DataScientia Symposium at DUT, said<\/a> the event has attracted more than 200 delegates from over 50 institutions across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Middle East and South America.<\/p>\n

“The participants are leading academics, policymakers, industry experts and representatives of international organisations,” he said, adding that both in-person and virtual delegates are taking part in the three-day programme.<\/p>\n

One of the keynote speakers is Dr Vincenzo Noris, Director for Research and Innovation at the European Commission, highlighting the symposium’s international significance.<\/p>\n

At the heart of this year’s discussions is the concept of Diversity-aware Sovereign AI\u2014an approach that seeks to ensure artificial intelligence is developed in ways that respect cultural diversity, local knowledge and linguistic differences while allowing countries greater control over their own data and digital infrastructure.<\/p>\n

Rather than treating people as passive sources of data, the initiative promotes AI systems that empower individuals to understand, manage and benefit from their own information. According to organisers, the long-term goal is to build transparent, inclusive and person-centred AI that serves society rather than simply advancing technology.<\/p>\n

A major milestone during the symposium was the launch of the DUT DataScientia Living Lab, the first of its kind in Africa.<\/p>\n

Dr Alimi described the Living Lab as an open innovation ecosystem where researchers, students, government, industry and communities can collaborate to develop and test new technologies. The facility is intended to support joint research, prototype AI solutions and validate technologies that address real-world challenges while improving quality of life.<\/p>\n

He said the Living Lab would extend collaboration beyond DUT to South Africa’s public universities and eventually partners across the African continent.<\/p>\n

Another key focus of the symposium is preserving linguistic diversity through AI. Researchers are exploring ways to digitise thousands of languages, including African languages that remain underrepresented in current AI systems. Organisers believe this could significantly improve access to technology while helping preserve cultural heritage and ensuring future AI systems better reflect Africa’s diverse societies.<\/p>\n

Dr Alimi stressed that the initiative is designed as a long-term project rather than a once-off event.<\/p>\n

“This is not going to be just a 2026 thing,” he said. “Over the next 10 to 20 years, we want to expand from Southern Africa to East Africa and Northern Africa so that it becomes a major platform for collaboration across the continent.”<\/p>\n

Organisers hope the symposium will strengthen international partnerships, attract research funding and position Africa as a leading contributor to the development of ethical, inclusive and sovereign AI. The meeting is also expected to produce a manifesto outlining practical steps towards advancing Diversity-aware Sovereign AI across Africa.<\/p>\n
