\"\"India\u2019s youth have discovered something that governments everywhere eventually learn the hard way: a movement that begins on a phone screen can end up knocking on the doors of power.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is the significance of the recent youth-led protests in India, according to political analyst, comparative religion scholar and author Omar Sharif, who joined The Insight<\/strong><\/em> to examine what the demonstrations could mean for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP government.<\/span><\/p>\n

The protests began with anger over examination paper leaks but quickly grew into something broader, tapping into frustrations around unemployment, governance and accountability. The movement eventually forced the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, marking what Sharif described as an unprecedented moment in Modi\u2019s tenure.<\/span><\/p>\n

Modi has since described the young protesters as \u201cmisguided children\u201d, saying they need guidance rather than punishment, and has spoken of forgiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Sharif believes the softer language should be viewed carefully.<\/span><\/p>\n

He argues that Modi\u2019s decision to concede to the protesters\u2019 immediate demand was a strategic move designed to drain momentum from the movement before it could grow into something larger. The question now is whether the protests have the substance and organisation needed to move beyond a single issue.<\/span><\/p>\n

The movement\u2019s greatest strength may also be its greatest challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is not formally tied to a political party or religious organisation, which has allowed it to attract support from a wider section of society. But Sharif says its current agenda remains relatively narrow. Without a broader programme or clearly defined political objective, sustaining the same level of mobilisation could prove difficult.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yet the protests have already demonstrated the extraordinary power of social media to reshape political communication.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharif points to the movement\u2019s ability to build a substantial online following and mobilise young people outside the traditional political machinery. For a generation raised in the digital age, social media is no longer simply a place to express frustration. It can become the infrastructure through which frustration is organised into collective action.<\/span><\/p>\n

That development matters in a country where political narratives have traditionally been heavily influenced by established parties and mainstream media.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Sharif warns that online momentum alone does not translate into political power. For the movement to become sustainable, he argues, opposition forces would need to overcome their divisions and develop a common political strategy. Otherwise, a fragmented opposition could struggle to convert public dissatisfaction into electoral change.<\/span><\/p>\n

There is also a darker side to the protests.<\/span><\/p>\n

Some young women who participated have reportedly faced online harassment, doxing, rape threats and death threats. Sharif says this highlights the difficult environment facing women who publicly challenge political power in India, while also arguing that protesters must exercise responsibility in how they express themselves publicly.<\/span><\/p>\n

For Sharif, however, one of the bigger questions lies beyond the protests themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n

He points to opposition voices who have spent years behind bars and asks what democratic accountability means when political dissent can carry such consequences. He argues that the international community and Indian society should pay greater attention to those cases and to questions surrounding constitutional and fundamental rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

The protests may not yet represent a serious threat to Modi\u2019s government.<\/span><\/p>\n

But they have demonstrated something that could prove far more important in the long run: India\u2019s young people are discovering that their collective voice can travel from social media to the streets, and from the streets into the corridors of power.<\/span><\/p>\n

The question now is whether this was simply a powerful moment or the beginning of something much bigger.<\/span><\/p>\n
