Get the qualification, build the career, make money, buy the house, travel, gain recognition and become successful.

From a young age, we’re asked, “What do you want to become?” But perhaps there is another question we don’t ask often enough: “Why?”

Why are we chasing success? Why do we want more money, more recognition and more possessions? And what happens when we finally achieve the things we’ve spent years chasing, but still feel that something is missing?

We live in an age of incredible technology, opportunity and information, yet so many people struggle with emptiness and a lack of direction. You can have a successful career and still feel unfulfilled. You can have thousands of followers and still feel alone. You can achieve the dream you’ve always wanted and still wake up wondering, “Is this all there is?”

And perhaps this is where the guidance of Muhammad ﷺ becomes so relevant to the world we live in today.

The Prophet ﷺ didn’t simply teach people how to live; he taught them why they live.

He gave humanity a bigger picture. Life has a Creator. Life has a purpose. We are accountable for how we live, and this world is not our final destination.

When that understanding changes, our definition of success changes too.

Success is no longer simply about how much we own, how much we earn or how many people know our name. It becomes about who we are, how we treat others, our relationship with Allah, and what we do with the blessings we’ve been given.

And this is especially important for young people. We constantly ask them, “What do you want to be?” Doctor? Lawyer? Engineer? Entrepreneur?

But perhaps we should also be asking:

“Who do you want to become?”

Because you can become highly successful without becoming a good person. You can have wealth without contentment. You can have knowledge without wisdom. You can have influence without having anything meaningful to say.

The Prophetic model doesn’t tell us to abandon ambition or worldly success. Rather, it teaches us to put them in their proper place. Work, achieve, build and contribute — but don’t allow the things you own to become the things that own you.

Because a compass doesn’t remove the storm. It gives you direction through it.

And perhaps that is what humanity desperately needs today. Not more things to chase, not more noise and not another definition of success — but direction.

So perhaps the question we should leave with today isn’t simply:

“What do I want from my life?”

But:

“What does Allah want from my life?”

Because once you know your destination, the storms become easier to navigate.

And perhaps that is where the Prophetic compass begins.

Muhammad ﷺ: Humanity’s Compass in a Sea of Chaos THE CHAOS WITHIN The Crisis of Purpose – Finding Direction in a World That Has Lost Its Way We live in a world that constantly tells us to achieve more.
