{"id":108326,"date":"2026-09-16T08:13:45","date_gmt":"2026-09-16T06:13:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/radioislam.org.za\/a\/?p=108326"},"modified":"2026-09-16T08:13:45","modified_gmt":"2026-09-16T06:13:45","slug":"justice-the-true-test-of-leadership-part-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radioislam.org.za\/a\/justice-the-true-test-of-leadership-part-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Justice \u2014 The True Test of Leadership &#8211; Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>When Power Becomes an Amanah<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Leadership, Justice &amp; the Islamic Way<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So far this week, we&#8217;ve looked at leadership as an <em>amanah<\/em>, a trust, and we&#8217;ve explored the Islamic concept of <em>Shura<\/em> \u2014 consultation and the importance of listening to others.<\/p>\n<p>But there is another quality without which leadership can never truly succeed:<\/p>\n<p><strong>JUSTICE.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because what good is a leader who listens, if they don&#8217;t act fairly?<\/p>\n<p>What good is consultation if decisions are ultimately based on favouritism?<\/p>\n<p>And what good is power if it is used to benefit some while others are treated unjustly?<\/p>\n<p>In Islam, justice isn&#8217;t an optional quality of leadership. It is a fundamental command from Allah.<\/p>\n<p>Allah says:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u0625\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0671\u0644\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u064e \u064a\u064e\u0623\u0652\u0645\u064f\u0631\u064f \u0628\u0650\u0671\u0644\u0652\u0639\u064e\u062f\u0652\u0644\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0671\u0644\u0652\u0625\u0650\u062d\u0652\u0633\u064e\u0640\u0670\u0646\u0650 <\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIndeed, Allah commands justice and excellence\u2026\u201d<\/strong> <em>(Surah An-Nahl, 16:90)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>And the Qur&#8217;an gives us an even more challenging instruction:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u064a\u064e\u0640\u0670\u0653\u0623\u064e\u064a\u0651\u064f\u0647\u064e\u0627 \u0671\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0630\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064e \u0621\u064e\u0627\u0645\u064e\u0646\u064f\u0648\u0627\u06df \u0643\u064f\u0648\u0646\u064f\u0648\u0627\u06df \u0642\u064e\u0648\u0651\u064e\u0670\u0645\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064e \u0628\u0650\u0671\u0644\u0652\u0642\u0650\u0633\u0652\u0637\u0650 \u0634\u064f\u0647\u064e\u062f\u064e\u0627\u0653\u0621\u064e \u0644\u0650\u0644\u0651\u064e\u0647\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0648\u0652 \u0639\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0649\u0670\u0653 \u0623\u064e\u0646\u0641\u064f\u0633\u0650\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0623\u064e\u0648\u0650 \u0671\u0644\u0652\u0648\u064e\u0670\u0644\u0650\u062f\u064e\u064a\u0652\u0646\u0650 \u0648\u064e\u0671\u0644\u0652\u0623\u064e\u0642\u0652\u0631\u064e\u0628\u0650\u064a\u0646\u064e<\/strong> <strong>\u06da<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cO you who believe! Stand firm for justice, as witnesses for Allah, even if it is against yourselves, your parents, or your relatives.\u201d<\/strong> <em>(Surah An-Nisa, 4:135)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Think about how powerful that message is.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Islam doesn&#8217;t say: <em>Be just when it benefits you.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>It doesn&#8217;t say: <em>Be just when the person deserves it.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>It doesn&#8217;t say: <em>Be just when you&#8217;re dealing with someone you like.<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It says <strong>stand for justice \u2014 even when it is against yourself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>That is an incredibly high standard for leadership.<\/p>\n<p>And Muhammad \ufdfa demonstrated this principle throughout his life.<\/p>\n<p>He \ufdfa did not measure people according to their wealth, social position or family background. Justice was not something reserved for the powerful, nor was it something only expected from the weak.<\/p>\n<p>There is a well-known incident involving a woman from a noble family of Quraysh who committed theft. Some people wanted the matter treated differently because of her social standing. When they approached the Prophet \ufdfa seeking leniency, he \ufdfa made it clear that the law could not have one standard for the powerful and another for everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>The lesson is profound:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Justice cannot depend on who you are.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And this is something that applies far beyond politics.<\/p>\n<p>We can talk about presidents and politicians, but every one of us has opportunities to practise \u2014 or fail to practise \u2014 justice.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A parent can be unfair between children.<\/li>\n<li>A teacher can favour one student.<\/li>\n<li>An employer can treat certain employees differently.<\/li>\n<li>A community leader can give opportunities only to people they know.<\/li>\n<li>A person can demand justice when they are the victim, but suddenly find excuses when someone they love is responsible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s why justice is such a powerful test of character.<\/p>\n<p>It is easy to say, <strong>\u201cI believe in justice.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The real test comes when justice costs us something.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes society becomes so focused on holding leaders accountable that we forget to examine our own behaviour.<\/p>\n<p>In today&#8217;s world, particularly with social media, this becomes even more important.<\/p>\n<p>A person can be judged, condemned and publicly criticised within minutes \u2014 sometimes before anyone has even established the truth.<\/p>\n<p>But Islam teaches us to be careful.<\/p>\n<p>Justice requires fairness. It requires truth.
