We then looked at whether we can trust the information we receive, whether we know our rights, and why access to information about public institutions and our communities matters.

Today, we bring the week together by looking at something that is sometimes forgotten:

With access to information comes responsibility.

We live in a world where information can travel incredibly quickly.

A story can be posted online and within minutes it can be seen by thousands of people. A message can be sent to a WhatsApp group and immediately forwarded to another group, and then another.

This means that we are not simply consumers of information anymore.

Many of us are also distributors of information.

Every time we forward a message, repost a video, share a news story or tell someone something we have heard, we are helping that information travel further.

And that raises an important question:

What responsibility do we have for the information we pass on?

It can be tempting to think, “I didn’t create the message, I only forwarded it.”

But the moment we choose to share something, we are helping give it another audience.

That’s why one of the simplest habits we can develop is to pause before sharing.

Ask yourself: Where did this information come from? Is there a reliable source? Is it current? Can I find the same information somewhere else? And do I actually understand what it is saying?

These questions are particularly important when the information could cause fear, panic, damage someone’s reputation or lead people to make an important decision.

Sometimes people share information because they genuinely want to help others.

They may receive a message warning people about something and think, “I should let everyone know.”

The intention may be good, but good intentions don’t automatically make information accurate.

We can accidentally contribute to confusion simply because we didn’t take the time to check.

This responsibility also applies when information supports our own beliefs.

It is easy to share something because it agrees with what we already think. But being responsible with information means applying the same standard to information we like as we do to information we disagree with.

We should be prepared to check both.

And this is where critical thinking becomes so important.

Critical thinking doesn’t mean doubting everything. It means taking a moment to consider the evidence, the source and the context before reaching a conclusion.

We also need to recognise that not every piece of information requires the same level of checking.

If someone tells you that it is raining outside, you can look through the window.

But if you receive a claim about health, money, a public service, a serious event or another issue that could affect people’s decisions, it makes sense to take extra care before passing it on.

And perhaps this is the bigger lesson from our entire week.

Access to information is important, but access alone is not enough.

We need accurate information.

We need information that we can understand.

We need to know where to find reliable sources.

We need to know our rights and responsibilities.

And we need to think carefully about what we do with the information once we receive it.

Our weekly theme has asked:

“Information Is Power: Do We Know What We Need to Know?”

Maybe the answer is not about trying to know everything.

Instead, it is about developing the habit of asking questions, checking information, seeking reliable sources and being responsible with what we share.

Because in today’s world, information can reach us in seconds.

But wisdom is knowing what to believe, what to question, what to verify — and what not to pass on.

And perhaps that is the real power of information.

Information Is Power: Do We Know What We Need to Know?
