Coriander is native to regions spanning from southern Europe and North Africa to southwestern Asia. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Coriander is a pleasantly sweet spice with a lemony top note. It is commonly used in chili and curry dishes. The coriander plant produces both a spice and an herb. The leaf is know as cilantro and when the plant goes to seed, we harvest the coriander seed. Coriander is used in many types of ethnic cooking, such as Latino, Middle Eastern, and Indian. In this country, it is also used to flavor cookies, pastries, breads, sausages and corned beef.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Cilantro is one of those herbs you either love or hate. It is a necessity for many Latin dishes, particularly salsa and ceviche, as well as Asian and Indian specialties. There arises a certain amount of confusion about cilantro, however, because it is called by different names in different areas. One thing is certain, you do not want to confuse cilantro with parsley!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Cilantro and Coriander Cooking Tips<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 Cilantro leaves and coriander seeds are not interchangeable. They have completely different flavors and textures. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 Fresh cilantro leaves are preferable in all applications calling for cilantro leaves. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 Coriander seeds are generally toasted before being ground to bring out their full flavor. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 Coriander is a popular ingredient in Indian curries, particularly garam masala .<br \/> <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 Cilantro root may be used as a replacement for garlic . They are generally toasted before being ground to bring out their full flavour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 In Indian dishes, we first start with oil\/ghee in a pan, then put some cumin or mustard seeds and then we put in coriander powder, turmeric and other spices and herbs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">This spice is an important ingredient in Indian spice mixtures like garam masala, subzi masala, sambhar powder, rasam powder, etc. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 Internationally, coriander seed is best known as an ingredient in baked goods, but also goes well with a large variety of foods such as potatoes, cheese and even chutneys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 Add coriander seeds to soups and broths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 To make a healthy spinach preparation, saut\u00e9 it with fresh garlic and coriander seeds, mix in garbanzo beans, and season with ginger and cumin. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 Add coriander powder to carrots, cauliflower, zucchini, potato and most other vegetables for a musky, earthy and fresh flavour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 You can aromatize rice with coriander seeds by adding 1 tsp ground coriander to the cooking water or strive for a crisp flavour by mixing 2-3 tbsp of coriander seeds.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">How to Store<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 Coriander seeds should be kept in an opaque, tightly sealed glass container in a cool, dark and dry place. <\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022 The whole seeds will stay fresh for about one year<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">How to Store Parsley, Cilantro, and Other Fresh Herbs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Method<\/span><\/strong><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">1 Snip off the bottom of the stems.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">2 Make sure the leaves are completely dry. Better to hold off rinsing them until you&#8217;re about to use them.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">3 Fill a jar or a water glass partially with water and place the stem ends of the herbs into the water in the jar.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">4 If you are storing the herbs in the refrigerator, cover loosely with a plastic bag. Cilantro loves cool temperatures and should be stored in the refrigerator. Coriander seeds can be boiled in water along with little pepper corns, cumin seeds, and garlic flakes to make a decoction that helps clear phlegm and nasal congestion.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022Oddly enough, the same concoction can be used to clear flatulence. Coriander seeds can be boiled in water to make coriander tea and mixed with honey to soothe the acidity, ease constipation, clear toxins from the body, and prevent indigestion.
