By far the most frequently used spice, pepper adds an excellent depth of flavor to nearly any savory dish, and many sweet dishes as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">This spice is commonly known as kali mirch (Hindi), maricha (Sanskrit), kalamari (Gujarati), mire (Marathi), Black pepper (English). Black pepper is rich in iron, manganese and dietary fiber. Piperine, a principle alkaloid found in black pepper helps in promoting brain functions, inhibits metabolism of nutrients present in body, improves digestion and reduces the incidence of stomach ulcers and colon cancer. It also acts as an anti-depressant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Black, white, and green peppercorns all come from the same vine. They grow in clusters (like grapes), and are harvested in various stages of growth. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Green peppercorns are young when they are picked and dehydrated, with a resulting mild flavor. The black peppercorns are left on the vine to fully mature and develop a stronger flavor profile. White peppercorns are actually black peppercorns, which have been soaked to remove the outer casing. This gives the white peppercorns a more intense flavor, with a slightly fermented taste and smell from the soaking process<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Cooking Tips<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Almost every recipe calls for a sprinkle or dash of pepper. For the novice, this can be a difficult measurement. Should you shake your pepper shaker once or twice?\u00a0 Should the grinder be turned five or six times?\u00a0 With the small measurements, it really doesn&#8217;t matter. However, if you are concerned about the intake of pepper, then five turns on your typical pepper grinder is about an 1\/8 of a teaspoon. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Other helpful cooking tips include:<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Put a few peppercorns in your pepper shaker to add flavor and prevent clogging.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">If cooking a recipe with a lot of pepper, be cautious of the cooking steam for it may cause irritation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Use in the preparation of venison as it is complementary to its deep flavor.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Add pepper at the end of the cooking process to reduce the loss of flavor.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Combine olive oil, lemon juice, salt, and cracked pepper to make a salad dressing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Additional Uses<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Aside from culinary deliciousness, pepper has other uses. It is toxic to several insects so is an effective insecticide. You can sprinkle pepper around non-garden areas to keep insects out. Mix \u00bd teaspoon of freshly ground pepper to one quart of warm water and spray it on plants to kill ants, potato bugs, and silverfish. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Pepper has also been used as a brandy flavor and in perfumes.<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">The best way to determine the flavor of peppercorns is to smell them. To cleanse you nose and sense of smell try smelling coffee beans in between each sample. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Home Remedies with Black pepper<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">Here are some simple and effective home remedies with black pepper that would guide to deal with day to day health problems:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022To keep a check on cholesterol level, add teaspoon black pepper in a glass of butter milk. Mix finely diced onion\u00a0 to it and drink.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022Heat a teaspoon of clarified butter in a pan. Add to it 3-4 black pepper followed by a glass of milk. Now add 3-4 crushed almonds\u00a0 and let it come to a boil. (Add sugar to taste). This formulation is beneficial in cases of sexual debility when taken at bed time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022Chewing 8-10 black pepper in betel\u00a0 leaf is known to be beneficial in gaining weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022Take a cup of water and add to it teaspoon black pepper, 2 teaspoon lemon\u00a0 juice and a teaspoon of honey. Drinking the same would help a person in reducing weight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022Grind 5-6 black pepper and mix with natural honey. Lick this paste to relieve dry cough. This formulation also works as appetite stimulant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022To cure all kinds of cough, grind black pepper and add sugar to it. Take it with clarified butter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,geneva; font-size: 12pt;\">\u2022While preparing tea, grind and add 2-4 black pepper along with ginger , a clove and few basil leaves. Make it into a very fine powder. Filter and add two teaspoon honey.
