Many kitchen items are dishwasher safe but there are just as many that should not be put in the dishwasher. Some kitchen items will claim to be dishwasher safe but after repeated washings they don't hold up.<\/p>\n

Washing dishes is a kitchen chore that we're hardly eager to get to. It takes a lot of the fun out of eating at home — which is why the dishwasher has such a magical air to it (and why takeout is so appealing). Dishes go into it dirty and they come out clean, all with the simple push of a button. But not everything can go into this handy kitchen appliance — some items can't handle the hot temperatures and others are too delicate for the abrasive detergent.<\/p>\n

Reusable\/Disposable Items
Many types of previously-used or reusable items should never be put in the dishwasher. These include:
•Aluminum takeout containers
•Plastic takeout containers
•Reusable aluminum pans or trays<\/p>\n

Certain Metals
Items made with — or featuring detailing containing — certains kinds of metal should not be put in the dishwasher, including:
•Brass items
•Bronze Items
•Gold-plated items
•Pewter items<\/p>\n

Certain Pots and Pans
Many common pots and pans should not be put in the dishwasher because doing so could lead to damage. Cast iron pans, for instance, lose their seasoning when put in the dishwasher; cakes will inevitably stick to cake pans that have been washed in the dishwasher.<\/p>\n

More pots and pans to never put in the dishwasher are:
•Tin pots or pans<\/p>\n

•Any type of non-stick pots and pans, including Teflon Pots and Pans with special coating<\/p>\n

•To prolong the life of your non-stick pans, bakewear or seasoned cast iron, don’t put them in the dishwasher. Heat and abrasive detergent will wear the coating off pretty fast and may make dishes more prone to rusting.<\/p>\n

Certain Utensils
Many common utensils should always be washed by hand rather than being put in the dishwasher, including:<\/p>\n

•All metal utensils, such as whisks<\/p>\n

•Rubber scrapers<\/p>\n

•Kitchen knives<\/p>\n

•Do Not Put Good Knives in the Dishwasher<\/p>\n

•Knives may rust if they remain wet after you put them in the dishwasher so I suggest that you hand wash knives and dry them immediately. Also if your knives have wood handles then the drying process will dry out the wood and crack the handles.<\/p>\n

•Plastic handled utensils may also crack with drying process. I had a nice set of steak knives with a heavy plastic handle. The handle was held in place by rivets and the handle cracked on either side of the rivet after one time in the dishwasher<\/p>\n

•Anything with adhesives<\/p>\n

•Some of your dishes or utensils may contain parts such as handles or labels that are attached with glue. Avoid placing such items in the dishwasher, because hot water may cause glue to melt and the parts will fall off. Moreover, small pieces of paper and glue from labels can clog the dishwasher drain.<\/p>\n
