Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News – 30-11-2017<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n \n Tech giant Apple has launched the Heart Study app in what it says is a first-of-its-kind research study using Apple Watch\u2019s heart rate sensor to collect data on irregular heart rhythms and notify users who may be experiencing atrial fibrillation (AFib).<\/p>\n AFib is the leading cause of stroke, is responsible for approximately 130,000 deaths and 750,000 hospitalizations in the US every year. Many people don\u2019t experience symptoms, so AFib often goes undiagnosed.<\/p>\n To calculate heart rate and rhythm, Apple Watch\u2019s sensor uses green LED lights flashing hundreds of times per second and light-sensitive photodiodes to detect the amount of blood flowing through the wrist.<\/p>\n The sensor\u2019s unique optical design gathers signals from four distinct points on the wrist, and when combined with powerful software algorithms, Apple Watch isolates heart rhythms from other noise. The Apple Heart Study app uses this technology to identify an irregular heart rhythm.<\/p>\n Apple\u2019s Jeff Williams says the company has received incredible feedback of how the Apple Watch has assisted in diagnosing AFib.<\/p>\n \u201cThese stories inspire us and we’re determined to do more to help people understand their health. Working alongside the medical community, not only can we inform people of certain health conditions, we also hope to advance discoveries in heart science.\u201d<\/p>\n Apple is partnering with Stanford Medicine to perform the research. As part of the study, if an irregular heart rhythm is identified, participants will receive a notification on their Apple Watch and iPhone, a free consultation with a study doctor and an electrocardiogram (ECG) patch for additional monitoring.<\/p>\n The Apple Heart Study app is available in the US App Store to customers who are 22 years or older and have an Apple Watch Series 1 or later.<\/p>\n No indication has been given if or when the app would be available in South Africa.<\/p>\n \u00a0<\/p>\n
