{"id":21962,"date":"2018-01-18T03:56:26","date_gmt":"2018-01-18T01:56:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.radioislam.org.za\/wordpress\/2018\/01\/18\/tech-firms-facebook-twitter-youtube-defend-handling-of-extremist-content\/"},"modified":"2018-01-18T03:56:26","modified_gmt":"2018-01-18T01:56:26","slug":"tech-firms-facebook-twitter-youtube-defend-handling-of-extremist-content","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/radioislam.org.za\/a\/tech-firms-facebook-twitter-youtube-defend-handling-of-extremist-content\/","title":{"rendered":"Tech Firms Facebook, Twitter &#038; YouTube Defend Handling of Extremist Content"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em>Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News &#8211; 18-01-2018<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">xecutives from Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have defended their attempts to prevent the spread of extremist content on their platforms in a Senate hearing. <\/p>\n<p>CNN Money reports, the social media firms stressed the increasing effectiveness of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to spot posts from terrorists in a Senate Commerce Committee hearing on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Facebook&#8217;s head of policy and counterterrorism, Monika Bickert says, 99% of terrorism content from ISIS and Al Qaeda is detected and removed before any user reports it thanks to automated tools like photo and video matching.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">YouTube&#8217;s director of public policy Juniper Downs meanwhile noted that 98% of violent extremist videos removed from the service are now identified by algorithms, up from 40% last June.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some members of the Senate committee expressed skepticism, however.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Senator Bill Nelson, a Democrat representing Florida, described the use of AI tools for &#8220;screening out most of the bad guys&#8217; stuff&#8221; as &#8220;encouraging,&#8221; but &#8220;not quite enough.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Facebook and YouTube executives each noted previously announced plans to recruit thousands of additional workers to review content across their platforms, including extremist content.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The hearing focused on domestic and international terrorism activity on the platforms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><em><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FaizelPatel143\" rel=\"alternate\">Twitter: @FaizelPatel143<\/a>\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Faizel Patel, Radio Islam News &#8211; 18-01-2018 xecutives from Facebook, Twitter and YouTube have defended their attempts to prevent the spread of extremist content on their platforms in a Senate hearing.
