Your body can only fill up on vital nutrients and fluid in the evening, so your food choices should be balanced and varied. The natural human response to fasting is to over-eat when food becomes available, but choosing the wrong foods during the evening will lead to illness and sluggishness during the day.

For your body to work as efficiently as possible you need to give it great fuel. Your meals need to be balanced and as natural as possible. Processed foods should be completely avoided, because they contain a limited amount of nutrition and usually far too many calories. Breaking the fast the traditional way with dates and water is ideal, the sugar from dates enters the bloodstream quickly and contains potassium which helps the body regulate fluid. Pure water is the only drink your body needs. When you drink fizzy drinks your body doesn't receive any nutrition and impairs the digestion of healthy foods. Try to make food as simple as possible, grains with roasted meat or fish in herbs with plenty of vegetables, gives a good balanced meal with essential nutrients.

It's always better to avoid heavily fried or spicy food because it can lead to indigestion. During the evening your intake of fruits and vegetables should be much more than normal, they contain high amounts of water and this will help to alleviate dehydration. Although it can be tempting to over-indulge when there is so much food available during the evening, your body will suffer more if you make the wrong choices. If you eat more than your body can physically burn, you will gain weight over Ramadan, so your portion sizes should be the same as usual.

Sleep is essential to your health, your body needs six to eight hours, lack of sleep will lead to headaches, irritability and even more hunger. The ideal way to balance your food is shown in the attached food pyramid, balancing your meals will make sure that you have covered your nutritional needs over Ramadan, while staying as healthy as possible.

Key benefits of bananas
Bananas are a good source of both potassium and vitamin B6.
