As we open the Quran, the first chapter starts with \u2018Alhamdulillah\u2019 which is generally translated as \u201call praise is due to Allah.\u201d In reality, the word Alhamdulillah signifies gratitude in our everyday lives. Hence, when someone asks how we are, a Muslim often responds with, \u201cAlhamdulillah.\u201d Similarly, Islam teaches us to be thankful throughout the day: for waking up from sleep, after eating our meals, drinking water, etc. In this way, one\u2019s entire life revolves around gratitude to Allah.<\/p>\n
In the beautiful chapter of the Quran, titled \u201cAr Rahman\u201d Allah asks the same question thirty-one times, <\/em> Allah has created us and then made this world for us. We are getting numerous benefits from all of His creations such as the sun, moon, clouds, rain, air, grasslands, animals, plants, rivers, oceans and countless other bounties of the natural world! After realizing all this abundance, how can a sensible person be anything but thankful to Allah?<\/p>\n \nAllah reminds us,<\/em> Ironically, we humans are the only ones who forget to be grateful to Him. Allah ends the above verse by emphasizing that He is forgiving. It\u2019s for this reason that we are not punished right away. Rather He gives us time to realize our mistakes and make amends.<\/p>\n Naturally, at times we may wonder whether it is truly beneficial to be grateful to Allah. In the Quran, Allah answers this question,<\/p>\n \u0648\u064e\u0625\u0650\u0630\u0652 \u062a\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0630\u0651\u064e\u0646\u064e \u0631\u064e\u0628\u0651\u064f\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0626\u0650\u0646 \u0634\u064e\u0643\u064e\u0631\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0644\u064e\u0623\u064e\u0632\u0650\u064a\u062f\u064e\u0646\u0651\u064e\u0643\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u06d6 \u0648\u064e\u0644\u064e\u0626\u0650\u0646 \u0643\u064e\u0641\u064e\u0631\u0652\u062a\u064f\u0645\u0652 \u0625\u0650\u0646\u0651\u064e \u0639\u064e\u0630\u064e\u0627\u0628\u0650\u0649 \u0644\u064e\u0634\u064e\u062f\u0650\u064a\u062f\u064c This verse proves that our gratitude is beneficial for us alone, and our ingratitude is harmful to us alone. \n\u201cThe seven heavens and the earth and all who dwell in them give glory to Him. There is not a single thing that is not chanting His praise yet you cannot understand their praise. He is ever forbearing, forgiving\u201d (Quran, 17:44)<\/em>.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cIf you are thankful, I will add more (favours) unto you but if you show ingratitude then my punishment is terrible indeed\u201d (Quran 14:7)<\/em><\/p>\n
\n\u201cWe endowed Luqman with wisdom: \u2018Be thankful to Allah\u201d (Quran 31:12).<\/em><\/p>\n
\nMay Allah give us wisdom to give thanks for all blessings by which we survive and thrive day after day.<\/p>\n
