\nThe non-accidental use of force against an elderly person that results in physical pain, injury, or impairment. Such abuse includes not only physical assaults such as hitting or shoving but the inappropriate use of drugs, restraints, or confinement.<\/p>\n
\nThe treatment of an older adult in ways that cause emotional or psychological pain or distress, including:
\n\u2022 Intimidation through yelling or threats.
\n\u2022 Humiliation and ridicule.
\n\u2022 Habitual blaming or scapegoating.
\n\u2022 Ignoring the elderly person.
\n\u2022 Isolating an elder from friends or activities.
\n\u2022 Terrorizing or menacing the elderly person.<\/p>\n
\nThis involves forced or unwanted sexual interaction of any kind with an older adult. This may include unwanted sexual contact or penetration or non-contact acts such as sexual harassment.<\/p>\n
\nThe unauthorized use of an elderly person\u2019s funds or property, either by a caregiver or an outside scam artist.<\/p>\n
\n\u2022 Misuse an elder\u2019s personal checks, credit cards, or accounts.
\n\u2022 Steal cash, income checks, or household goods.
\n\u2022 Forge the elder\u2019s signature.
\n\u2022 Engage in identity theft.<\/p>\n
\nCarried out by unethical doctors, nurses, hospital personnel, and other professional care providers. This can include:
\n\u2022 Not providing healthcare, but charging for it.
\n\u2022 Overcharging or double-billing for medical care or services.
\n\u2022 Getting kickbacks for referrals to other providers or for prescribing certain drugs.
\n\u2022 Overmedicating or under medicating.
\n\u2022 Recommending fraudulent remedies for illnesses or other medical conditions.
\n\u2022 Medicaid fraud.<\/p>\n
\nFailure to fulfil a caretaking obligation. This constitutes more than half of all reported cases of elder abuse. It can be intentional or unintentional, based on factors such as ignorance or denial that an elderly person needs as much care as they do. Neglect is the failure to meet an older adult\u2019s basic needs.
