The ingredients are blended until the egg yolk and oil form a stable suspension of fat globules.

Mayonnaise has been a staple of French cooking for centuries. There are any number of uses for mayonnaise, many of which have little to do with its appeal as a food. Perhaps one of the most common uses for mayonnaise is as a condiment for sandwiches, along with tomatoe sauce mustard and salad. Many sandwich meats are very lean, which may improve their flavor but do little for the overall 'mouth feel' of the sandwich.

A layer of mayonnaise spread across the bread provides moisture and the satisfying feeling of fats.

Mayonnaise as a condiment works well on hamburgers, cold cuts and deli sandwiches. Mayonnaise is also used to marinate chicken and steak dishes, very often used for atchaar and chutneys and off course a great way to make up your very own tartar sauce. One of the other uses for mayonnaise is as a base for salad dressings or sauces. Adding pickle relish, chopped onions or cabbage to mayonnaise can create a good tartar sauce for fish dishes. Mayonnaise can also be used as a binder for cold salads such as chicken, tuna or seafood salads. More elaborate sauces may call for a mayonnaise base with additional herbs and spices heated in a saucepan.

1. Make up your own tartar sauce: 3tblsp of mayonnaise, 3 tblsps of plain yoghurt and 1tblsp of sandwich spread. Mix together well.

2.Use it as a conditioner for your hair! After shampooing, massage 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup of mayo into your hair. Let it sit for about 10-15 minutes, shampoo again (use much less than the first time) and rise with apple cider vinegar (which is great for your hair and also gets rid of the mayo smell) and water.

3.Kill Head Lice It is a safe way to kill lice, and it works! Massage mayonnaise into your hair and cover it with a shower cap before you go to sleep. Wash it out in the morning and use a fine comb to comb out any dead eggs. If needed, repeat 7-10 days later.

4.Make Your Plant Leaves Shine Plants looking dull? Wish they would shine the way they did when you first purchased them? Get a clean and shiny look that will last for week or even months. Take a little bit of mayonnaise and rub each leave using a paper towel to get the sleek shine professional florists get with their plants.

5.Mayonnaise brushed lightly on to fish while frying it will take away that super smellyness!

6.Strengthen your fingernails To add some oomph to your fingernails, just plunge them into a bowl of mayonnaise every so often. Keep them bathed in the mayo for about 5 minutes and then wash with warm water.

7.Relieve sunburn pain Did someone forget to put on sunscreen? To treat dry, sunburned skin, slather mayonnaise liberally over the affected area. The mayonnaise will relieve the pain and moisturize the skin.

8.Remove dead skin Soften and remove dead skin from elbows and feet. Rub mayonnaise over the dry, rough tissue, leave it on for 10 minutes, and wipe it away with a damp cloth. 9.Remove crayon marks Did the kids leave crayon marks on your wood furniture? Here’s a simple way to remove them that requires hardly any elbow grease: Simply rub some mayonnaise on the crayon marks and let it soak in for several minutes. Then wipe the surface clean with a damp cloth. — Ammarah Radio Islam +27118547022 ammarah@radioislam.co.za www.radioislam.co.za

Mayonnaise, often shortened to mayo in casual use, is a creamy emulsion of egg yolks, oil, salt, lemon juice and mustard.
