Hindu nationalist groups argue that Urdu is a \u2018Muslim\u2019 language after clothing brand \u2018FabIndia\u2019 uses an Urdu word for a Diwali advertisement. The ad reads \u201cJashn-e-Rivaaz\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cJashn\u201d in Urdu means a celebration while \u201cRiwaaz\u201d, which is actually \u201cRiwaaj\u201d, means tradition. The title translated to \u201cA Celebration of Tradition\u201d.
\nHowever, Hindu right-wing forces in India forced the brand to withdraw its festive season advertisement, accusing it of \u201churting\u201d the religious sentiments of Hindu\u2019s.<\/p>\n

Nivedita Menon, professor of comparative politics and political theory at International Studies School of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in Delhi, speaks to Radio Islam on Urdu being seen as a \u2018Muslim\u2019 language in India.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is ridiculous even to suggest that Urdu is a \u2018Muslim\u2019 language,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Menon adds: \u201cit would be a mistake to see this as \u2018Indians\u2019 or Hindus\u2019 being outraged; this is very much a political project of \u2018Hindu-Rashtra\u201d. \u201cHindu-Rashtra\u201d refers to a century-old Hindu supremacist movement that seeks to convert India into an ethnic Hindu state by designating another community – the Muslims.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s ruling political party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)\u2019s members and other Hindu nationalist groups, started attacking FabIndia on social media for using an Urdu word.<\/p>\n

A BJP member, Tejasvi Surya, tweeted: \u201cDeepavali is not Jashn-e-Riwaaz,\u201d calling Diwali by its more traditional name.<\/p>\n
