Here's a look at what cream of tartar is, where it comes from, and how cream of tartar is used.

Uses in the kitchen
Chemists have another name for cream of tartar – they call it potassium hydrogen tartarate. It is a white, sour-tasting crystalline powder, and has many uses in the kitchen.

When you beat egg white, it produces foam that traps air. This is what helps make pastry light and fluffy. But the foam can break up, so bakers add a pinch of cream of tartar. This prevents the foam from collapsing. This helps the pastry remain smooth throughout.

Cream of tartar has many other uses too. If you make sugar syrup (for use with gulab jamuns, rasgullas etc), add a pinch of cream of tartar.

That will prevent the sugar from crystallizing out of the syrup. Mixed with potassium chloride, it can serve as a substitute for salt. This is useful for people who have high blood pressure and should not take sodium.

If you add a pinch while boiling vegetables, it helps them keep their colour. This is because vegetable pigments are very sensitive to changes in pH. Cream of tartar acts a buffering agent, i.e. it prevents the pH from changing.

What do you do if you run out of baking powder, and the shops are closed? You can make your own with baking soda and cream of tartar.
When baking a cake, you can add a pinch each of these powders and mix well. The two chemicals react to form carbon dioxide in the oven, which causes the dough to rise. Baking soda alone will not work, as it needs an acid to activate it.

CLEANING TIPS USING CREAM OF TARTAR
Tough Stains
•Regular bleach is a great way to remove stubborn stains on a variety
of surfaces however, bleach can be toxic when mixed with other chemicals plus it emits noxious fumes. Cream of tartar provides a safe, gentle alternative to using household bleach and removes tough stains.
Remove mold and mildew from tile grout by combining cream of tartar with vinegar for a tough, toxin free cleaning solution. Combine one part cream of tartar with half the amount of vinegar or water until you create a paste. Rub the compound over the stain then scrub with a brush. Scrub in a circular motion. You can also use the cream of tartar and vinegar solution on chrome or stainless steel without leaving those acid stains you see when using regular bleach.

Caked-on Food
• Having to scrub pots and pans with caked-on food can turn simple
dishwashing into a workout. Instead of spending hours scrubbing your pans, mix cream of tartar with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide and rub over caked- or baked-on food. Another option to removing stubborn stuck-on food is to combine 2 tsp. of cream of tartar with 2 tsp. of vinegar. This non-abrasive cleaner also attacks stains and successfully cleans nearly all surfaces.

To remove stains from fabrics mix cream of tartar with glycerin. Apply it on the stain and let it stay for a while. Then wash as usual. Make sure you have removed the stain completely before putting the clothes in the dryer. Heating will only make the stain set in.

Cream of tartar also beautifully cleans copper. Instead of spending
money on expensive copper cleaners, combine 1 tsp. of cream of tartar with ½ tsp. of lemon juice. Rub the copper item then rinse and polish to achieve the same result as you would with the commercial copper cleaner.
The fireplace collects a great deal of soot and even though it might seem natural or normal, it's easy to clean and is a great way to make every part of your home feel fresh and clean again!

To start you'll need 4 things:
• A Small Bowl
• Warm Water
• Cream Of Tartar
• Nail Brush

Simply combine your water and cream of tartar in the bowl and stir until it makes a thick paste (just like when you make a baking soda paste to clean with). For a small container of cream of tartar, it will usually need 3 tablespoons of water. Add one tablespoon at a time until it's creamy and thick.
Next, use the nailbrush to scrub your fireplace hearth and the visible areas inside the chimney. The soot will buff right off. When finished, rinse with water and dry with a towel. We suggest using an older towel for this mission… you know that one you keep around to dry the dogs off or to help out in the garage.
Things will be bright and shiny all over again. It's an inexpensive remedy to a very common problem and even if your fireplace doesn't look dirty, we promise a once over with this mixture will still amaze you!

—
Ammarah
Radio Islam
+27118547022
ammarah@radioislam.co.za
www.radioislam.co.za

Cream of tartar or potassium bitartrate is a common household chemical and cooking ingredient.
