There is a famous belief and it is thus quoted in many talks and lectures that the Tashahhud originated on the night of Mi\u02bfraj during a conversation between Allah \ufdfb, the Prophet \ufdfa and Jibreel AS. The question is, is this really true?<\/p>\n
The alleged incident has been written in many books. The shortest version is that of \u02bfAbd al-La\u1e6dif bin al-Malak, also known as Ibn Firishtah, in his Mabariq al-Azhar. This is the same text quoted by Mulla \u02bfAli al-Qari in his Mirqat al-Mafati\u1e25.<\/p>\n

\n\u201cIt has been narrated that when he \ufdfa was raised above [for the Mi\u02bfraj], he praised Allah Most High with these words [i.e. al-Ta\u1e25iyyat], whereupon Allah Most High remarked: \u2018Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah\u2019s Mercy and His Blessings.\u2019 He [i.e. the Prophet] responded: \u2018Peace be upon us and Allah\u2019s righteous servants.\u2019 Thereafter, Jibreel (AS) said: \u2018I testify that there is no deity but Allah, and I testify that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
This has also been quoted by Imam al-Qur\u1e6dubi in his Tafsir from Ibn \u02bfAbbas RA with only a partial chain.
\nAlthough this story has been written by a few scholars and is still told by many in public lectures, it holds no academic basis in Shar\u012b\u02bfah. This is for three reasons:<\/p>\n
1. There is no chain of transmission recorded for the incident \u2013 neither authentic nor weak.<\/p>\n
2. The hadith of Mi\u02bfraj has been authentically narrated with overwhelming details, and in no narration is the above incident related.<\/p>\n
3. The origin of Tashahhud has explicitly been mentioned in authentic narrations.<\/p>\n
One ought to not be deceived by names of great scholars when the story is circulated on social media or related in a lecture. Although the likes of al-Qur\u1e6dub\u012b \u0612, Ibn al-Malak (Ibn Firishtah) \u0612, \u02bfAl\u012b al-Q\u0101r\u012b \u0612 and others have written it, none have provided a chain of transmission in their works.<\/p>\n
Secondly, the details of Mi\u02bfraj are recorded in numerous authentic narrations of a very lengthy hadith, which would take up several pages should it be typed in a contemporary style. These narrations entail nuanced intricacies with regard to exactly what happened in the Night Journey and illustrate quite a picture. However, two things are not mentioned therein: the date of its occurrence and the incident in question. The narrations can be read in the \u1e62a\u1e25i\u1e25ayn and other works of \u1e24adith.<\/p>\n
Also, the Tashahhud itself has been authentically narrated in the books of Hadith. The great companion, Abdullah b. Mas\u02bfud RA is on record as saying:<\/p>\n

\n\u201cWhen we used to pray behind the Prophet \ufdfa, we used to say: \u2018Peace be upon Jibreel and Mika\u02beeel; peace be upon so-and-so.\u2019 Allah\u2019s Messenger \ufdfa looked towards us and said:<\/p>\n
\u201cIndeed, Allah is the Peace. Whenever one of you prays, let him say: \u2018All verbal, physical and monetary deeds are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and Allah\u2019s Mercy and His Blessings. Peace be upon us and Allah\u2019s righteous servants.\u2019 When you say this, it will reach every righteous servant of Allah. [Then, continue:] \u2018I testify that there is no deity but Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and messenger.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
To conclude, although this incident has been widely quoted, however, several senior Muhadditheen (Hadith masters) of the recent past were unable to locate its chain. These seniors include Shaykh Anwar Shah Al-Kashmiri, Al-Muhaddith Shabbir Ahmad \u2018Uthmani and Shaykh Muhammad Yusuf Binnori (rahimahumullah).<\/p>\n
One should avoid quoting such narrations until their chains are located and their authenticity is verified.
\nWhen reciting the tashahhud, the Fuqaha (Jurists) state that one should not have the intention of following the above incident.<\/p>\n
