The Prophet ﷺ thus had tremendous love for the Quran and spent his entire life in spreading its true message.

The Holy Quran was revealed to Allah`s Messenger ﷺ over a period of twenty three years via the medium of the Angel Jibra`eel AS. The Sahabah RA say that after the first revelation of Iqra when there was a pause in revelation and no wahi was being sent to Nabi ﷺ, then Nabi ﷺ actually became sad and worried.

The wisdom behind the temporary cessation of revelation was so that the fear that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had felt when Jibreel AS first came down to him might dissipate, and so that he might long for the return of the revelation, and so that consolation might come down to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from Allah, may He be exalted, thus increasing him in faith and steadfastness. It was also so that Allah might test the people, so that the believers would become steadfast and the disbelievers would go astray.

Haafiz Ibn Hajar r said: The cessation of revelation refers to it being delayed for a period of time. This was so that what the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) felt of fear might dissipate, and so that he would long for its return.

The Prophet ﷺ read the Quran on all occasions, everywhere and a lot. The Quran is a message that shaped the Prophet ﷺ in terms of thought, belief, ethics and deed. He never got tired of reading the Quran and never left it; he read the Quran for a long time. He always read the Quran at home, at fairs, in his talks and in prayer. He would sometimes spend the whole night reading a verse from the Quran until the morning.

Abu Dhar RA reported: The Messenger of Allah prayed at night reciting a single verse until morning, by which he would bow and prostrate, “If You punish them, they are Your servants. If You forgive them, You are the Almighty, the Wise,” (5:118). When the Prophet ﷺ awoke in the morning, I said, “O Messenger of Allah, you continued to recite this verse until morning, bowing and prostrating by it.” The Prophet ﷺ said, “Verily, I asked my Lord for the intercession of my nation and He gave it to me. It will be granted, if Allah wills, to whoever does not associate anything with Allah.” [Musnad Ahmad]

The Quran was his source and his supplication that he never quit reading. The basis of his invitation was the verses of the Quran; he spoke based on the Quran. The verses of the Quran became his glorification and supplication. His day began with the Quran and ended with the Quran.

He read and advised his ummah to read the last verses of the chapter of al-Hashr after the Morning Prayer (fajr) and the last verses of the chapter of al-Baqara after the night prayer (isha).

In addition, he constantly read some supplications from the Quran in his daily life, like reading the last verses of the chapter of Aal-i Imran, Ayatul-Kursiyy and Muawwidhat (the chapters of al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas) at night.

Not only did he love reciting the Quran but the Prophet ﷺ enjoyed listening to it being read as well.

There are some narrations that the Prophet ﷺ praised the people who read the Quran clearly and beautifully. Abdullah Ibn Masud RA to read to him the Quran. Thereupon, Ibn Mas’ud RA said,

“O Messenger of Allah! Shall I read the Quran to you though it was sent down to you?” The Prophet ﷺ said,

“Yes, I like listening to the Quran from others.”

Ibn Mas’ud started to read.
