You\u2019re your own experiment, so here\u2019s what to try on your second, third or 20th attempt.<\/p>\n<p>First and foremost: If you fail at your resolution attempt, don\u2019t beat yourself up, and know you\u2019re not alone. Experts in the field explain that we all struggle to do the things that we know are good for us because we give into impulses for instant gratification.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some tips you want to keep in mind:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Feel Free to Start Fresh<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Want to try again? Remember, a resolution doesn\u2019t need to be tied to New Year\u2019s. It can be following a weekend, following a birthday or any event or occurrence that motivates and encourages you to bring about some change. So if you missed your New Year\u2019s goal, you can start again tomorrow, on a Monday, next week or any marker that means something to you, just as long as you\u2019re ready to give it another go. It won\u2019t guarantee success, but you don\u2019t need to wait until another year comes around on the calendar to give it another go.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t be too Hard on Yourself<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>And be kind to yourself. We talk in much harsher tones to ourselves than we would to other people. We wouldn\u2019t say to a kid trying to learn something \u2018that\u2019s so stupid\u2019 but that\u2019s how we talk to ourselves.<\/p>\n<p>When resolutions run off the rails or fall apart but you still want to try again, talk to yourself like \u201ca child who`s feeling discouraged. You wouldn\u2019t say \u2018that\u2019s because you\u2019re an idiot.\u2019 You would say \u2018come on you can do it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Experts offer a few more common self-put downs, and ways to flip the script:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Instead of \u201cI blew it. What\u2019s the point now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026say, \u201cThat was a bad decision, but a good learning opportunity. What\u2019s my next step?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Instead of, \u201cI\u2019m SO hungry!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2026say, \u201cI\u2019m hungry, which means its working! It\u2019s a bit uncomfortable, but I\u2019ve gotten through worse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Instead of, \u201cMy legs are SO sore. I can\u2019t possibly work out today&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u2026say, \u201cLet\u2019s give my leg muscles a rest today. What can I do to work my arms?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>or: \u201cOf course my muscles are sore. They\u2019re supposed to be.
