After the Bani Isra\u2019il were delivered on the outskirts of the Holy Land by Musa \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645, they came under the sway of the Philistines. After a few hundred years of living under the Philistines, they united behind \u1e6cal\u016bt (Saul) who marched them forward to confront the Philistines. The Bible talks of the giant Goliath of the Philistines who challenged the Banu Isra`il to combat. However, it was not Saul who came out to confront Goliath but a young and unarmed Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645. The well-known story of how Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 brought the mighty Goliath down to his knees with only a sling, need not be retold here in great detail.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd there went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. And he had a helmet of brass upon his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail; and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of brass. And he had greaves of brass upon his legs and a target of brass between his shoulders. And the staff of his spear was like a weaver\u2019s beam\u2026\u201d [1 Samuel XVII 4-7]<\/p>\n
But Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 was only armed with a sling and a few stones, \u201cAnd D\u0101w\u016bd put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it, which smote the Philistine in his forehead, and he fell upon his face to the earth\u201d. [1 Samuel XVII 49]<\/p>\n
Saul became the first King of the Israelites, but according to the Old Testament King Saul was jealous of Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 and tried to get rid of him. Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 retreated with his companions to the wilderness. They formed a coalition with their old enemies the Philistines and together attacked and killed Saul.<\/p>\n
Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 was crowned the Second King of the Israelites.<\/p>\n
Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645, the King and Prophet, united his men and moved towards Jerusalem, which had been a Jebusite city since the 1800s BC. Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 defeated the Jebusites who were a tribe in Jerusalem, and Jerusalem became his capital. Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 integrated with the local population and did not kill nor expel the Jebusites. The Bible itself says, \u201cThe Jebusites dwell with the children of Judea at Jerusalem unto this day\u201d. [Joshua XV 63]<\/p>\n
Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 spent almost his entire life in and around Palestine and, in particular, in the vicinity of al-Quds (Jerusalem). He served al-Aq\u1e63\u0101 Sanctuary and many events in his noble life are focused around the Masjid al-Aq\u1e63\u0101.<\/p>\n

We bestowed Our favour upon Dawud. (We commanded): \u201cO mountains, sing Allah\u2019s praises with him\u201d; (and so did We command) the birds. We softened the iron for him. [S\u016brah Saba\u2019 34: 10]<\/p>\n
Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 was favoured with a melodious voice and the Qur\u2019an informs us that the hills and birds praised in unison the Greatness of Allah. These hills are none other than the hills of the city of al-Quds (Jerusalem). The Holy Qur\u2019\u0101n also refers to Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 as the vicegerent; the only other Prophet referred to as vicegerent is Adam \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645. This could be because Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 was not only a Prophet but also the king and ruler of Palestine.<\/p>\n

Although for the Israelites the importance of al-Aq\u1e63a Sanctuary (Mount Moriah) really begins with the era of Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645, to Muslims Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 forms a link in the chain that began with Adam \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645.<\/p>\n
Dawud \u0639\u0644\u064a\u0647 \u0627\u0644\u0633\u0644\u0627\u0645 managed with great difficulty to unite the different Jewish tribes and also subdue other citizens. However, his total reign only lasted for around 40 years, from 1018 BC to 978 BC.<\/p>\n
