With the tax season officially kicking off, individuals and businesses are urged to familiarise themselves with new regulations and rules.

The tax season primarily focuses on individual taxpayers, including those earning a salary or operating as sole traders. SARS has taken a proactive approach, leveraging third-party information such as employer records, retirement annuities, insurance companies, and banks to pre-populate tax returns. For most individuals with straightforward tax affairs, this streamlined process eliminates the need for professional assistance and simplifies their tax obligations.

Auto assessment notices have already been issued to many taxpayers based on the information available to SARS. If taxpayers agree with the assessment, no further action is required, and the assessment becomes final. However, the option to submit an amended or edited return remains open for those who believe additional information is missing or wish to amend their returns.

Beneficial ownership of trusts has emerged as a crucial concern. SARS is undertaking a campaign to update its information, ensuring comprehensive details of trustees and beneficiaries are on record. Recognising that compliance levels within the trust space need improvement, SARS aims to address potential risks associated with trusts.

Digital platforms have played a significant role in enhancing the taxpayer experience. SARS offers a highly acclaimed e-filing system, recognised as one of the world’s best tax digital platforms. A mobile app has also been introduced, catering to individuals who prefer accessing services via their smartphones. These user-friendly platforms allow taxpayers to request and submit their returns effortlessly as SARS takes the lead in digital tax administration.

During the interview, Khan emphasised the importance of taxpayers’ cybersecurity. As cybercriminals target unsuspecting individuals during tax season, SARS issued a warning to remain vigilant. Taxpayers were reminded that SARS would never send SMS or email containing links, ask for passwords or usernames, or request banking details through social media platforms. Staying cautious and avoiding sharing sensitive information is vital to thwart potential cyber threats.

SARS has implemented a convenient appointment system to assist taxpayers further, minimising wait times and ensuring efficient service. By making an appointment in advance, taxpayers can ensure a quick and smooth visit to SARS branches if necessary.

As the tax season progresses, SARS aims to foster compliance, simplify processes, and enhance the overall taxpayer experience. With their comprehensive digital platforms and proactive approach, SARS strives to empower individuals and businesses, making tax compliance accessible and efficient for all South Africans.

Taxpayers are encouraged to contact the SARS call centre or schedule an appointment at their nearest branch for any uncertainties or queries.

Listen to the full interview with Sulaimaan Ravat on Sabahul Muslim here.

Sameera Casmod | sameerac@radioislam.co.za 10 July 2023 | 21:38 CAT 2 min read The 2023 tax season began on Friday, 7 July 2023, and the South African Revenue Services (SARS) announced changes to the treatment of trusts. In an interview with Radio Islam International, Fareed Khan, SARS Regional Director for Gauteng South, shed light on […]

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[28,4995

post-80081","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-latest-news","category-south-africa

https://i0.wp.com/radioislam.org.za/a/wp-content/uploads/2023/07/SA-Revenue-Service.jpeg?fit=124%2C124&ssl=1
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
