Traveling in Islam comes with its own set of etiquettes (adab) and guidelines to ensure that the journey is undertaken with a positive and Islamic spirit. Here are some etiquettes to observe when traveling in Islam:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tying Loose Ends (Fulfil your debts):\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Ensure that your responsibilities and obligations are met before leaving, such as fulfilling debts, completing tasks, and making arrangements for the care of dependents.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Before you begin your journey, fulfil whatever responsibility is required for your role. If you are a parent and will be leaving your children, ensure that your children are left with money and a trusted caretaker. If you are a student, make sure that your assignments are complete prior to your hiatus. If you have any debts to pay, settle them as soon as you can before leaving for an adventure.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It has been reported on the authority of \u2018Amr bin al-\u2018As that the Messenger of Allah (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) said: \u201cAll the sins of a Shahid (martyr) are forgiven except debt.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Saying Goodbye (Al-Ma’a as-Salamah):\u00a0<\/span> Before leaving, bid farewell to family and friends, and make supplications for their well-being and safety in your absence.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Offer Nafal Salaah as Sallatul Safar: I<\/span>f you do have the time before you travel, offer two raka\u2019ah of\u202f<\/span>Salatul Musafir<\/span><\/a>\u202fto ask Allah Almighty for protection, safety, and ultimately His Blessings. You can refer to the du\u2019as above to recite after you\u2019ve completed your prayer. This is recommended and not obligatory for every Muslim.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Travel with good intention: <\/span>Everything begins with the right intention, so what is yours? Have you ever pondered on why you engage in traveling in the first place? Is it to seek knowledge from saints and sages in another country? Is it to find inner peace? Whatever reason you have decided must be beneficial for you and should not be blameworthy. Remember, there are a lot of rewards \u2014 tenfold in fact \u2014 for those who rectify their intentions before performing deeds, InshaAllah.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Making Dua for a Safe Journey (Du’a al-Safar): <\/span>Before setting out, recite the specific supplications for traveling (du’a al-safar) and seek Allah’s protection and guidance throughout the journey.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Malik related to me that he heard that when the Messenger of Allah, (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) set foot in the stirrup intending to travel, he would say, “In the name of Allah. O Allah! You are my companion in the journey and the Khalifa of my family. O Allah! Spread out the earth for us and make the journey easy for us. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the hardship of the journey and from returning to sorrow and a distressing sight regarding property and family.”<\/span>\u200f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

‘Ali ibn Rabi’a said:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I was present when ‘Ali (ra) had an animal brought for him to ride. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he said: \u201cIn the Name of Allah [Bismillah],\u201d and when he settled on its back, he said: \u201cPraise be to Allah!\u201d Then he said: \u201cGlory be to the One who has placed this at our disposal, for we would not have been equal to the task [Subhanalladhi sakhkhara la-na hadha wa ma kunna la-hu muqrinin], and to our Lord we are surely returning [wa inna ila Rabbina la-munqalibun].\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Then he said: \u201cPraise be to Allah,\u201d three times, and: \u201cAllah is Supremely Great,\u201d three times, then: \u201cGlory be to You! I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for no one forgives sins but You!\u201d Then he laughed, so I said to him: \u201cWhat has made you laugh, O Commander of the Believers?\u201d He said: \u201cI saw Allah\u2019s Messenger (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) do just as I did now, after which he laughed, so I said: “What has made you laugh, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied: \u2018Your Lord surely marvels at His servant when he says: \u201cMy Lord, forgive me my sins, knowing that no one but He forgives sins’!\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

O children of Adam! We have provided for you clothing to cover your nakedness and as an adornment. However, the best clothing is righteousness. This is one of Allah\u2019s bounties, so perhaps you will be mindful.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Humility and Gratitude (Shukr wa Tawadu’): <\/span>Approach the journey with humility and gratitude to Allah. Recognize the blessings of travel and the ability to move freely.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Patience and Forbearance (Sabr): <\/span>Traveling can be challenging, and unexpected situations may arise. Exercise patience and forbearance in dealing with difficulties or inconveniences.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The Messenger of Allah (<\/span>\ufdfa<\/span>) said, “Travelling is a torment because it deprives a traveller of his food, drink and sleep. So when one of you has accomplished his purpose of journey, let him return home quickly.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kindness to Fellow Travelers (Mu’amalat al-Safariyyin): <\/span>Treat fellow travelers, whether Muslim or non-Muslim, with kindness, respect, and courtesy. Islam encourages good conduct and consideration for others.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
