On 30 November 2023, South African National Parks (SANParks) recognised deserving conservationists at the 17th<\/sup> Annual Kudu Awards ceremony held at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand. The event is an initiative to celebrate groups and individuals who have made significant contributions to the preservation of South African natural heritage.<\/p>\n

This year, the late Oom Popo Scott (Posthumous) was honoured with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award, according to a SANParks Report. This award stands as a tribute to his unparalleled work ethic and ceaseless dedication, celebrating his invaluable contributions to the stewardship of the Tsitsikamma Section within in the Garden Route National Park. Additionally, it acknowledges his instrumental role in the establishment of the renowned Otter Trail and various other tourism offerings. This accolade is a testament to 45 years of unwavering and devoted service to the SANParks, leaving an indelible mark on the legacy of conservation and natural wonders.<\/p>\n

\u201cOom Popo Scott\u2019s lifetime of dedication to conservation exemplifies the spirit of the Kudu Awards. His commitment to the environment has not only contributed to the success of SANParks but has also inspired a new generation of conservationists,\u201d Ms Vuyiswa Radebe, Regional General Manager for the Garden Route National Park said.<\/p>\n

Oom Popo Scott played a pivotal role in the construction of the Otter Trail, with one of its huts bearing his name, the “Scott” hut. He was responsible for building the network of paths, including the boardwalk leading to the suspension bridge from recycled plastics for day trails. Oom Popo’s hands-on dedication extended to the establishment of various tourism amenities, encompassing campsites, diverse viewpoint decks, chalets, and access roads. Remarkably, he single-handedly built these facilities, including the unfortunate first restaurant that succumbed to fire, at the Tsitsikamma Section of the Garden Route National Park, employing his skills without the aid of proper equipment.<\/p>\n

Ms Vuyiswa Radebe, Regional General Manager for the Garden Route National Park expressed gratitude to the late Popo Scott, stating, \u201cOom Popo Scott\u2019s lifetime of dedication to conservation exemplifies the spirit of the Kudu Awards. His commitment to the environment has not only contributed to the success of SANParks but has also inspired a new generation of conservationists.<\/p>\n

It is imperative that South Africa\u2019s natural treasures must be safeguarded. SANParks collaboration with TotalEnergies and First National Bank (FNB) emphasise the significance of protecting the nation\u2019s distinctive natural wonders. It brings to attention the importance of endeavours that advance environmental preservation and sustainable tourism.<\/p>\n
