The results of the 2024 general election in Taiwan, held on 13 January, indicate Taiwan\u2019s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) party will remain in power.<\/p>\n

In the Asia-Pacific Report<\/a> on Radio Islam International, Sanusha Naidu discusses the impact of Taiwanese election results on cross-strait relations with China and the implication for global dynamics, especially in the context of US- China relations.<\/p>\n

\u201cTaiwan has raised questions for Beijing in terms of the future trajectory of the One-China policy, and more importantly, what is the strategic ambit going forward?\u201d Naidu says.<\/p>\n

Maldives requests withdrawal of Indian troops <\/strong><\/p>\n

The Maldives have requested India to withdraw troops by March 15th. The request came shortly after the Mohamed Muizzu, the Maldives president, returned from a state visit to China.<\/p>\n

This move reflects India and China\u2019s struggle for influence in the Indian Ocean, according to Naidu.<\/p>\n

Island states, dependent on larger nations like India, navigate a delicate balance of diplomacy, contestation, and strategic engagements, Naidu notes.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese island states\u2026are dependent on the developing corporations and resources of larger countries like India.\u201d<\/p>\n

This dependence, coupled with India\u2019s increased interference in the Maldives\u2019 domestic politics, are threatening the country\u2019s sovereignty, leading to the request for the withdrawal of Indian troops.<\/p>\n
