South Africa\u2019s intervention at the ICJ has earned global attention and takes centre stage on the ASRI Report on Radio Islam International with Dr Imraan Buccus, senior research associate at Auwal Socioeconomic Research Institute (ASRI).<\/p>\n

Dr Buccus posits that South Africa\u2019s intervention is a symbol of global leadership in the face of a colossal crisis.<\/p>\n

\u201c[South Africa] is offering global leadership is offering global leadership in a time of global crisis in a time when so many countries are so bound by their machinations of interactions with other countries in the west, such as the US,\u201d Dr Buccus notes.<\/p>\n

He notes the significant benefit of South Africa’s intervention, highlighting the country’s ability to move beyond solidarity rhetoric to take concrete and impactful actions.<\/p>\n

The interview indicates that the case has had positive effects on South Africa\u2019s moral standing.<\/p>\n

Dr Buccus acknowledges the recent challenges faced by the country but argued that the intervention showcased South Africa’s commitment to the greater good of humanity.<\/p>\n

Notably, he points out the heartening support received from various quarters, including those traditionally hostile to the government, indicating a resurgence of moral authority.<\/p>\n

The legal team’s performance received praise, with Dr Buccus commending the top-tier human rights lawyers in South Africa. Despite anticipated pushback and attempts to delegitimise the ICJ process, the global recognition of the country’s legal arguments has been notable.<\/p>\n

Dr Buccus attributed the pride felt by many South Africans to the courage displayed in challenging a powerful state like Israel.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think quite simply it\u2019s the courage of the South African decision to challenge the Israeli state,\u201d Dr Buccus says.<\/p>\n

The decision to stand up for oppressed people and question a rule-based international order resonated with the populace, turning it into a potential turning point in international relations.<\/p>\n

While acknowledging potential pushback from Israel and the US, Dr Buccus expressed hope for a positive judgment that would reinforce the principles South Africa stood for.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the judgement goes against Israel, then it will be a huge victory for us. But if it goes in favour of Israel, then the rule-based international order is going to be called into question. I think its credibility; how its responding to humanity; the case of western domination over the world; I think all of this will be called into question.\u201d<\/p>\n

He emphasised the importance of South Africa’s continued ethical stance, advocating for principled actions not limited to a single event.<\/p>\n

The interview concluded with a reflection on the lessons learned and the role South Africa can play globally. Dr Buccus talks about South Africa\u2019s role in challenging the unipolarity of Africa and the world, contributing significantly to a multi-polar landscape and representing the interests of the global south.<\/p>\n
