The Department of Basic Education has issued a directive urging all public schools to finalise their plans and conduct the 2024 School Governing Body (SGB) elections this month. This move aligns with the Government Gazette issued last year, confirming the crucial election dates.<\/p>\n

According to Department of Basic Education spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga, the research underscores the significance of active SGBs in fostering excellence within schools, as evidenced by improved academic performance and other metrics.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe want to ensure that every school has a functional SGB because this is the body that looks after the school’s interests and influences decisions. A school with a good governing body is more likely to improve its performance,\u201d Mhlanga told Radio Islam.<\/p>\n

The Department is required by law to hold elections for SGBs every three years. The actual SGB elections will take place in all ordinary public schools from March 1st to March 31st, 2024.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are performing a legal duty as a vital member of the community as the SGB is established in terms of the South African Schools Act,\u201d added Mhlanga<\/p>\n

Mhlanga highlighted that\u00a0people with a criminal record are not eligible to run for a position in a School Governing Body and cannot vote.<\/p>\n

According to the DA, today marks the commencement of the final month of public hearings for the Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill. The Party continues to emphasise the importance of continuing to voice opposition to this legislation.<\/p>\n

Public schools nationwide are encouraged to adhere to the guidelines outlined in the Government Gazette and ensure the smooth conduct of the 2024 SGB elections.<\/p>\n
