A number of unregistered medical professionals have recently been arrested following reports from the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).<\/p>\n

Medical practitioners are required by law to register with the HPCSA, and failure to do so constitutes a criminal offence.<\/p>\n

Eric Mphaphuli, the senior manager of the inspectorate office at HPCSA told Radio Islam International that the council has launched an investigation to inspect all medical practices nationwide, and to raise awareness among the public about the issue.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are working with the law enforcement agency and our other sister organisations to ensure that we identify and individualise the people who are practicing while not registered. But we also embark on a campaign to educate members of the public how to identify those people who are not registered and how to report them,\u201d Mphaphuli says.<\/p>\n

The public awareness campaigns aim to educate the community on identifying and reporting unregistered practitioners.<\/p>\n

Regarding the registration process, Mphaphuli clarified that individuals with foreign qualifications must also register with the HPCSA before practicing in South Africa.<\/p>\n
