You might notice subtle cues like negative body language, offhand comments, or tense interactions with your colleagues. These feelings of jealousy
often stem from deeper insecurities, past experiences, and societal pressures.

According to Katie Mohamed, a marketing entrepreneur and founder of W-Suite, jealousy can become harmful when it intensifies and isn’t properly addressed. She refers to this unchecked jealousy as something that can grow into a ‘disease’ if left unresolved.

Jealousy often manifests in different ways, whether it’s envying a colleague’s material success or their physical appearance. These feelings can lower self-esteem, leading to self-doubt and even self-sabotage. This not only affects personal well-being but can also harm professional relationships,
creating tension, gossip, and insecurity in the workplace.

While there’s no instant solution for overcoming jealousy, there are some positive strategies that can help manage these feelings and foster a more supportive and uplifting environment. Here are a few tips:

Be honest with your feelings – Take the time to clarify what’s really bothering you.
Communicate kindly – Address any concerns with a calm and non-confrontational approach.
Shift your mindset – Instead of comparing yourself, ask, “How can I grow and learn from this?”
Support each other – Let go of the habit of pulling others down and lift them up instead.
Cultivate kindness – Strive to be a better, more compassionate person.
Reflect on yourself – Acknowledge your own areas for growth.
Hold back judgment – Work on being understanding rather than critical.
Build your self-confidence – Focus on being secure in who you are and what you bring to the table.
Surround yourself with positivity – Keep good people close and distance yourself from negativity.
Spread kindness – Empower others and let go of the “mean girl” mentality.

While jealousy is a natural emotion, it can be managed and contained. With awareness and effort,
we can create more positive, supportive, and harmonious workplaces where everyone thrives.

Listen to the full interview on the New Horizons program with Faaiza Munshi and Katie Mohamed.

Rabia Mayet | rabiamayet@radioislam.co.za 3-minute read 14 August 2024 In the workplace, jealousy can surface in various ways, from friendly competition to the pressures of balancing personal and professional success.
