The new wing in Bara burns unit takes flight – Image\/ WITS University<\/p><\/div>\n

The official opening of the Wits Roy McAlpine Burns Unit on Monday is good news for burn patients.<\/p>\n

The unit is situated at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, which was expanded with an R100 million donation.<\/p>\n

The unit also features a new theatre, a state-of-the-art teaching lab, six additional adult beds (bringing the total to 12), and four more paediatric beds (increasing the count to 11).<\/p>\n

News24 reported that the Roy McAlpine Foundation donated R70m to fund the project, while the university provided the rest.<\/p>\n

Professor Adelin Muganza, Head of the Unit at CHBAH, said the new addition would be tremendously helpful in solving their problems.<\/p>\n

“Our challenges have been a limited number of beds, especially in the ICU, and we previously had limited time for operations, and some delays in surgery because of the high volume of patients,” he says.<\/p>\n

He added that the unit has provided services to more than 30,000 patients and performed more than 40,000 burn-related procedures over the years.<\/p>\n

Professor Muganza emphasizes that the new facilities will significantly improve patient outcomes and ensure timely and effective treatment, providing the audience with reassurance about the quality of care.<\/p>\n
