A recent oversight inspection at the river in Morninghill has revealed that it is contaminated with high levels of E.Coli, posing severe health risks to the area\u2019s residents.<\/p>\n

Raw sewage is spilling into the river from poorly maintained infrastructure which also places the fauna and flora in the vicinity in serious danger.<\/p>\n

The Gauteng DA, together with Ward 132 Councillor Annette Deppe, are calling for immediate action from the Department of Environmental Affairs and the Gauteng Department of Roads and Transport to address the issue.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Radio Islam International, DA\u2019s environmental affairs spokesperson Leanne De Jager said that the main contributing factor is poorly maintained sewage infrastructure, which leads to frequent pipe bursts.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the biggest contributing factors is the fact that the infrastructure, particularly in Alexandra itself on the west bank, which is the older part, the infrastructure on the sewage lines has not been maintained. Those lines burst frequently due to the fact that it\u2019s overcrowded, so the pressure on the system is too high,\u201d De Jager explained.<\/p>\n

The problem is generally exacerbated during the rainy season which places additional pressure on the sewage system, causing further spills into the river.<\/p>\n

De Jager emphasised the urgent need for a complete overhaul of all water lines, including sewage water lines, in the province.<\/p>\n
