Its impact extends beyond physical appearance, influencing musculoskeletal alignment, organ function, mental health, and confidence. Speaking on Radio Islam International, experienced biokineticist Mumtaz Chohan shed light on the importance of good posture and core strength in achieving a balanced, healthy body and mind.

Chohan explained that maintaining proper posture keeps the bones, muscles, and joints aligned, reducing strain on the spine and preventing chronic pain in areas like the neck, back, and shoulders. “Good posture ensures musculoskeletal health, while poor posture can lead to long-term issues, including chronic pain and even digestive discomfort due to compressed organs,” she stated.

Beyond physical health, posture also has significant psychological effects. “Your posture reflects your confidence,” said Chohan. “Standing upright projects self-assurance, whereas slouching can make you appear unsure. Research shows that poor posture increases stress hormones like cortisol and decreases serotonin, the happy hormone, which directly impacts mood.”

While strengthening the core is often emphasized as the foundation for good posture, Chohan underscored the need for a holistic approach. “It’s a myth that core strength alone is enough,” she said. “You also need strong back, neck, and pelvic muscles for stability. Additionally, flexibility is vital—tight chest muscles can pull shoulders forward, contributing to poor posture.”

Many struggle with maintaining proper posture due to muscle weakness or everyday habits, such as prolonged sitting behind desks or slouching over screens. “Without strong muscles to support posture, the body adapts to incorrect positions, making it harder to maintain good alignment as you age,” Chohan warned.

Chohan recommended incorporating exercises that strengthen the core, back, and pelvis to combat these challenges while improving flexibility. “Biokinetics takes a comprehensive approach, addressing root causes like weak muscles or poor flexibility to develop long-term solutions,” she noted.

Chohan’s advice reinforces the importance of posture as a lifestyle choice. “Your posture affects how you breathe, move, and engage with the world. Stand tall, activate your core, and embrace the confidence that comes with a healthier you,” she concluded.

Listen to the full interview on Sabahul Muslim with Moulana Sulaimaan Ravat and experienced biokineticist Mumtaz Chohan here.

Neelam Rahim | neelam@radioislam.co.za 5-minute read 07 December 2024 | 18:08 CAT Often overlooked in daily life, posture is a fundamental component of overall health and well-being.
