South African National Parks (SANParks) is stepping up safety and security measures at the Kruger National Park to ensure a seamless festive season for visitors. During an interview with Radio Islam International<\/a>, Isaac Phala, a representative for SANParks, shared the details of these efforts.<\/p>\n

While these measures are routine for the festive season, Phala emphasized the importance of collaboration with external stakeholders to enhance visitor safety. \u201cOur security mandate is within the park, but we partner with private security firms, tribal authorities, municipalities, and the business sector to secure routes leading to our gates,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n

Once inside the park, visitors are relatively safe. However, Phala urged vigilance during travel to the park. \u201cAlways travel in a convoy, if possible, choose safe stops, and contact local police if an area appears unsafe,\u201d he advised.<\/p>\n

Technological advancements are playing a critical role in the park\u2019s security efforts. Vehicle number plate recognition and remote monitoring systems have proven effective in apprehending stolen vehicles attempting to cross borders into Mozambique or Eswatini. Phala highlighted a recent success: \u201cWe identified stolen vehicles from Pretoria using this technology and prevented them from leaving the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

These systems are also vital in combating rhino poaching. \u201cSuspicious vehicles raise red flags. We conduct stop-and-search operations to verify identities and permits. This helps us counter activities like snaring and poisoning,\u201d Phala added.<\/p>\n

The park has also strengthened partnerships with neighbouring countries like Mozambique to address cross-border poaching. Since 2012, memoranda of understanding and legislative changes in Mozambique have led to significant arrests. \u201cAs recently as this year, three notorious syndicate leaders were convicted,\u201d Phala said.<\/p>\n

SANParks\u2019 multifaceted approach ensures a safe experience for visitors while safeguarding wildlife. \u201cWe wish everyone a safe and joyful festive season,\u201d concluded Pala.<\/p>\n
